Nashville, Tennessee closer to having its first Basque Club ever after a “great meeting,” last Thursday

Six adults and two toddlers are, so far, the first eight members of Nashville, Tennessee’s still unofficial and ‘under-construction’ Basque Club. Last Thursday they had their first get-together at a cafeteria in downtown. “It was great,” Nicole Wilbur told EuskalKultura.com. “First we are going to focus on building an online presence so that people can find us,” she added.

“Presencia Vasca” ends its 25th Anniversary year with recognition by the Argentinian Chamber of Deputies

The Chamber of Deputies passed a resolution expressing its approval of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the “Presencia Vasca” radio program led by Federico Borras Alcain.  The distinction is similar to another one given to Presencia Vasca by the Senate last May.

Literature, film, Basque courses and parties on Euskera Day at Basque clubs in Berlin, Sao Paulo and Sydney

Basque clubs around the world have been celebrating Euskera Day with several activities organized with a lot of excitement and the effort of hundreds of volunteers and Basque language lovers. In Berlin, for example, literature was the star, with a talk by young writers Irati Elorrieta and Danele Sarriugarte, as well as a multimedia presentation “Euskal Herria-Germany.”  In Sao Paulo, Brazil, the students at the Brazilian Basque club renamed their classroom, while in Sydney Australia, the Gure Txoko organized a meal including an Aurresku.

The Skalari locomotive thrilled Mexico City and Guadalajara: both concerts selling out

Enthusiasm from Juantxo Skalari and The Rude Band after two concerts in Mexico as part of its “Rude Station Tour,” that promotes their latest album in several cities in Europe and the Americas.  The musicians from Navarre gave two concerts that sold out in Mexico City and Guadalajara-Jalisco.  We are reproducing the blog of the tour here that reflects the rush that Juantxo Skalari and The Rude Band created in Mexico.

The 14th Congress on the exile of the Hamaika Bide Association begins today in Tolosa.  This edition is focused on the thinkers who were left out of official speeches: women, homosexuals, religious exiles, and visionaries. The event will begin to celebrate the centennial of the birth of Cecilia Garcia de Guilarte, journalist and writer from Tolosa, who was exiled in Mexico.  Afterwards, the congress will move to Donostia.  All of the congress sessions are open to the public.

“Vasco” Arruabarrena, technical director of the Boca Juniors, visited the Basque club in Chacabuco

Visiting Chacabuco, the Technical Director of the Boca Juniors gave a talk to members and friends at the local Basque club.  During the talk, and even if the topic was central, Arruabarrena didn’t just talk about soccer but also made reference to his roots, highlighting that he has a Basque last name on his mother’s side as well, Aristegui.  Those passionate about soccer from neighboring Basque clubs also attended the talk coming from Junin and Pergamino.

Basque dance against the Sanfilippo Syndrome at a charity concert by Korrontzi and the Madrid Basque club

On December 13, the folk group Korrontzi and the dantzaris from the Madrid Euskal Etxea will join to put on a Basque music and dance show at the Circulo Theater of Fine Arts in Madrid to benefit the Stop Sanfilippo Foundation.  Sanfilippo Syndrome is a genetic disease that mainly affects children.  All proceeds will go towards research for a cure for this malady.

Basques in Argentina celebrated the Euskera Day at Basque clubs, cultural centers and in the streets

Thanks to students and teachers, the colors of Euskera flew in the streets of San Nicolas

Dozens of invitations to celebrate the International Day of Euskera came in 2015 from the Basque Diaspora in Argentina.  The proposals, while diverse, all had one common goal: to celebrate the Basque language as it should be, highlighting its importance in a festive climate.  Following is a summary of the activities that took place on December 3 and on the days following.

The Zelaiko Euskal Etxea from Santa Rosa holds a year-end lunch for 120 people to celebrate “an excellent 2015”

To say farewell to a very good year, members of the Zelaiko Euskal Etxea organized an excellent event

Thanks to the commitment and work of its members, the Zelaiko Euskal Etxea in La Pampa has had an interesting revival lately.  Besides the traditional monthly get-togethers they have also added Basque classes, the choir and a club newsletter.  Happy and with projects for the New Year, members and friends of the club in Santa Rosa closed 2015 with a BBQ, dancing and recognitions.

Mondragon University celebrates 40 years of “Amerikanuak” with its author, William Douglass

This Wednesday, the Mondragon University will celebrate 40 years of the book Amerikanuak with one a special conference on the campus in Aretxabaleta.  The book, written in 1975 by William Douglass and Jon Bilbao, tells the story of the Basque Diaspora in America, and has become the cornerstone work for Basque Studies.  Author, William Douglass is the guest of honor at the event that will include the participation of researchers from several universities and representatives of the Diaspora.
