Only a few hours are left for the San Sebastian festivities to begin, in a year where the Tamborradas in the Diaspora are playing a special role. Yesterday, they received well-deserved recognition by Donostia’s Town Hall and the DSS2016 at an event that took place at the San Telmo Museum. There, Tamborradas in Necochea, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Bahia Blanca, Mexico and Barcelona were mentioned but the tribute was extended to all, big and small, that have been taking place around the world for years this Donostian style of celebrating.

The Associazione Culturale Euskara (ACE) began this year receiving in Pamplona the ENE award from Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Society of Basque Studies. The recognition made the club very happy and as Alex Mendizabal told EuskalKultura.com, “The award was presented to the ACE, but it is for everyone who works on the Euskara platform, Euskara.it promoting the Basque culture in Rome in exchange for nothing. Viviana, Roberta, Marcello, Maurizio, Dario….” “We should talk about the tremendous contribution that these non-Basque speakers make and the work they do for Euskera,” he said.

Basques in the Diaspora have once again beat those in Donostia and Azpeitia, and have already begun celebrating San Sebastian Day and its Tamborrada. The Basque club in Paris celebrated with a dinner on Saturday, and in New York, the Euzko Etxea gathered members for a meal on Sunday. Beginning tomorrow morning, the sound of the drums will extend through many Basque clubs around the world, like in Madrid, Barcelona, Montreal, Lima, Shanghai, London, Mexico and Argentinian Necochea, where they have organized, as always, a large program for the week.

The Euskaltzaleok and Laurak Bat, Basque clubs in Valencia, have worked closely together for the last years, resulting in the Literary Contest, Letters from the Diaspora, now in its third year. In prior editions, the response was very good and both entities invite Basques from around the world to practice their Basque, writting a few lines and taking part.in the contest.

At a time to evaluate and make wishes, why not dream about a trip to the Basque Country? If you live in Argentina, maybe in 2016, your dream will come true, thanks to a proposals like the one by Mariana Domine Irigoyen, member of the Arrecifes Basque club, who also has experience in organizing tours of the Basque Country. “Among other experiences, 2016's trip will connect us with Aste Nagusia, the summer city festival in Bilbao,” Domine said. The trip can be paid for in pesos or with a credit card.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has sent a Christmas and New Year Message to the Basques living abroad highlighting the slogan 'diasporizatu' or 'diasporizing' adopted by the 6th World Congress of Basques Abroad organized last November in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Urkullu makes a call to become aware of the importance of the Diaspora and to continue building bridges between Euskadi and the Basques and Basque Communities scattered around the globe.

The Basque club in Brussels celebrated on December 12 the fourth edition of its “Olentzero Badator” (Olentzero is coming), a party that welcomed Christmas and the mythic Basque coal maker to the Belgian capital, loaded with toys for the children. Club members took to the streets to sing Christmas carols, warming the cold winter temperatures, and afterwards gathered in the warmth of a dinner where there was more singing, dancing and the sensation that Christmas in Brussels was a little more Basque.

While many Basque clubs in Argentina are already enjoying their summer vacation, others like Necochea are currently holding some of their most important events of the year: The Festival of Communities January 15-17, and San Sebastian Week from January 19-23. While his way through Argentina, Olentzero also visited Basques in Necochea giving candies to old and young alike.

What Moves the World (originally entitled Mussche), the second novel by Basque writer, Kirmen Uribe has been very well-received in Japan where it has been chose among the best five books of the year. The novel was published just a few months ago, in November, and in this short time period it has achieved winning over experts and readers. The work was translated from Euskera to Japanese by Nami Kaneko.

Invited by teachers, Andrea Bella, Maria Laura Moreno Sasiain and Martin Zabalza, some 20 Basque students participated in the first Basque Weekend at the Santa Lucia del Este beach in Uruguay. Everyone was very satisfied with how successful it was and the organizers told EuskalKultura.com that they’d like to make this an annual event.
