Invitation to the presentation of the book by Koldo Ordozgoiti tomorrow in Tolosa

Tomorrow, Wednesday, the book The Odyssey of Xabiertxo: the last Steamer written by Koldo Ordozgoiti and published by Ekin Basque publishers in Buenos Aires will be presented in Basque city of Tolosa (Gipuzkoa) in the plenary room at city hall.  The work tells the true story of a group of refugees who randomly met on the Groix, the last steamer that sailed from Bordeaux to Buenos Aires on June 12, 1940.

Organizers of the conference “Agirre in Berlin,” that concluded last Friday in  Berlin, were very satisfied with how it went.  Mari Jose Olaziregi, Etxepare Basque Institute, stressed that the conference “The Legacy of Lehendakari Agirre's Government” has accomplished its goal of promoting the study of the figure of Agirre and his legacy in academia.  The Berlin Euskal Etxea, on the other hand, emphasized the coverage it received in both Basque and German media.  Following is a photo chronicle.

At the lunch to celebrate the Day of the May Revolution, Arantxa Soraluce with her daughters, Itziar and Ainhoa Aguirre in Zazpi’s kitchen

The people in charge of preparing the meal were the well-known sukaldaris (chefs) Arantxa Soraluce and Itziar Aguirre.  At the same luncheon, members of Zazpirak Bat celebrated May 25th and the day of San Prudencio.  Along with this news, the club also invites everyone to another event: a tribute to the Argentine flag that the women’s group, Emakume Abertzale Batza, will hold on June 11th.

An international conference in Mexico City will analyze the historic Basque-Navarran presence in Mexico and Central America

Ancient manuscripts kept at the Jose Maria Basagoiti Historic Archive at the College of the Vizcainas

On June 14th at the College of the Vizcainas in Mexico City the second edition of an International Conference on the Basque-Navarran presence will take place organized by the Jose Maria Basagoiti Historic Archive, and the Bascongada Society of Friends of the Country (RSBAP) in Mexico.  The event will analyze the contribution of Basques and Navarrese throughout the history of Mexico and Central America in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Notary, Luis Zaldua, was again designated as the president of the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea Basque Club in Salto, Uruguay, a position that he also held in 2003-2004.  The new board of directors is also comprised of Hugo Llona, vicepresident; secretary, Ana María Zaldua; pro-secretary, Analí Moreale Olaizola; treasurer, Fernando Urroz; pro-treasurer, María Inés Bentancor; and director, María Noel Arrúa. Articles published in the daily Pueblo de Salto last Friday.

The President of Navarre, Uxue Barkos, recognized “the example, effort and work of the Navarrese who had to leave Navarre to make a better life for their families,” during the celebration last Saturday in Lekunberri of the 28th edition of the 'Day of Navarrese living abroad.' The event was attended by nearly 1,000 people.  Barkos thanked everyone for their interest in disseminating the culture of Navarre and its identity.

Descendant of a Yarza emigrant from Oñati married in 1855 in Uruguay with a Lasarte woman from Oronoz, Enrique Yarza is a lawyer, historian and genealogist. He has just presented a book on his ancestors in Montevideo and Minas, Uruguay.

“From Pilota to the Kitchen:” a gastronomic festival pays tribute to Basque pilotaris in Mexico

Former pilotaris, Pedro Txikuri, Santi Txikuri, Enrique Bonilla and Rafael Badiola were the center for a beautiful tribute at the end of May, as part of an event that joined Basque gastronomy and this most appreciated sport in Mexico. The initiative was proposed by Pablo San Roman who gathered nearly 300 people at the club Mundet including food lovers, pilota fans, friends and family.
