The Tapa bar “Vasca,” from the inside and out

Vasca is located in the Punta Carretas neighborhood of the capital city and has the capacity for 60 guests.  It menu includes tortilla, mussel croquettes and pork loin (solomo) on “Vasca” bread, but also includes vegetarian options that complete their offerings whose main objective is to fuse Basque, Spanish and Uruguayan cooking.

The Doniene Choir, from Leioa Bizkaia, visited Madrid last weekend. They performed two recitals thanks to the local Euskal Etxea.  Both took place at the Church of San Ignacio, where the choir surprised the audience with a large repertoire, that included religious pieces, opera and zarzuela, as well as world music, and of course Basque folk songs.

She is known for her role in Asier Altuna's Amama. Actress, Iraia Elias, from Zarautz in Gipuzkoa, has been in Argentina since March.  She is taking a course in Buenos Aires on Lecoq theater technique, and she has connected with the local diaspora and has even attended the screening of her film at euskal etxeas.  EuskalKultura.com talked to her in the Argentine capital city.

Gatibu will tour North America with dates in NY, Mexico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington and more

Next Saturday, Gatibu will leave for North America on a concert tour that will take them to various cities in both the US and Mexico.  Their confirmed dates are in NY, Mexico, San Francisco, Chino (NABO Convention) and Washington DC where they will also perform at the huge US Basque event: the Smithsonian Museum’s Folklife Festival.  Gatibu has also told EuskalKultura.com that they will be adding some dates and new concerts in Visalia, CA and maybe in Tijuana, Mexico.

Birth celebration for the 20th anniversary of Toki Eder in Jose C. Paz took place on Sunday

The Basque club in Jose C. Paz, celebrated two decades of live with a gigantic paella for 150 people.  Among their guests were various representatives from neighboring Basque communities, as well as from the Federation of Basque-Argentine Entities, with President Hugo Andiazabal also joining in the festivities. “It was an unforgettable celebration, with that wonderful Basque atmosphere that we have in our house,” Maria Angeles Oñederra told EuskalKultura.com.

Paris will enjoy an intense Euskal Jaia this weekend with “Paris-Basque 2016”

This weekend the fronton, Txikito de Cambo area, in Paris will be the center for a big Basque festival thanks to the “Paris-Basque 2016” fair.  The program of activities is extensive and for all tastes, there will be Basque food, music, and dance, pilota, rural sports, children’s rugby and broadcasting of live matches of the European Championship, held in France.

The names of the four fellows from the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad are published

The Resolution was published in the Official Bulletin on June 14

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) published, on June 14, the names of the four people chosen who will be trained over the next twelve months as fellows from the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad in its offices in Vitoria-Gasteiz (2), as well as at Basque Government Delegations in Argentina (1) and the US (1).  The four fellows will begin their practical training today at the Basque Government in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Winners of the fourth edition of the Paella Contest at the Euzko Etxea in La Plata

The fourth edition of the paella contest took place on June 10 with 8 participating cooks. First place went to the local dantzaris and second was shared between the club’s sports group and the Casal de Catalunya.  After the program of activities the La Plata Basque Club invites everyone to a screening today of Begiradak as well as learning about their activities in the month of May.

Jazoera highlights Radio Euskadi's “Txalupa,” clandestine Basque radio that broadcast from Caracas

Radio Euskadi has received the award “Bizkaitar argia-Ilustre de Bizkaia,” 2016 as the Provincial Government of Bizkaia recognized its 70 years of work. The Bizkaian institution recalled the contribution of the Basque-Venezuelans who maintained Radio Euskadi during the Franco years.  The Jazoera Newsletter remembers the adventure in its latest issue: “After Mitterrand closed Radio Euzkadi in Baiona, nobody would have thought that a clandestine station, with two old transmitters from an oil company, could broadcast a program that ran nearly three hours from this spot in the tropical Caribbean."

Rosario Basque, Ignacio Unzueta, came home to celebrate his 80th birthday, with some of his friends from Zazpirak Bat

The “Miercolinos” said farewell to Ignacio Unzueta.  Seen here from left to right: Ignacio Unzueta, Juan Carlos Lasalle, Enrique Otaño, Julio Zubillaga, Luis María Barrandeguy and Guillermo Sías.

He left Euskadi at the age of 16 and is now celebrating his 80th.  Residing all these years in Rosario, Argentina, Ignacio Unzueta has two homes and decided to celebrate his 80th birthday in his bornplace, Mendiola, Abadiño, Bizkaia.  Some of his friends at the Rosario Zazpirak Bat Basque Club didn’t hesitate to join him, and travel to the Basque Country to celebrate such a special occasion with Unzueta.  The gang leaves this Thursday and after the birthday celebration they will visit some of the Basque Country.
