Boiseko Ikastola has opened the process to select the position of Director of this institution, the only one that teaches preschool in the United States in an environment tied to the Basque language and culture. The selected person will be in charge of the institution in all its aspects, including the educational and economic management, including designing plans, promotion and follow-up. The deadline for submission of applications ends on July 15.

Finishing touches took place yesterday for today’s inauguration at 10am (4pm in Europe) of the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival dedicated this year to the Basques and entitled, “Basques: Innovation by Culture.” After the official event, and with all its areas in operation, the small Basque Country is mounted against the US Capitol and will host the first concerts this evening with Kepa Junkera and Sorginak on stage.

The Governing Council of the Basque Government approved the call yesterday for this year’s Gaztemundu program, aimed at youth from Basque clubs who would like to visit Euskadi. The program will focus on Basque gastronomy and the number of spots open is 25. Applications can be submitted after the call is published in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country in a few days.

Eusko Txokoa is a restaurant and a Basque club. The Elorriaga family, descendants of Basques from Bizkaia, established it 15 years ago, and since then it has been the nucleus for Basque families in the area. It has also become a place for good food that has staples on its menu like shell fish that are typical in dishes in the Basque Country. “It is a family project, it is our house,” Norberto Elorriaga, grandfather of the family explained to EuskalKultura.com. “But we would really like to get in touch with the rest of the community in the country….”

It is not to be missed. There are few occasions like this one where the Basques can come, share their culture, their reality, past and present, their plans and calling for the future in front of a massive international crowd as this summer in Washington DC. The numbers estimate that a million people will visit the Fair; with Basques being the only leitmotiv; in front of the Capitol; on a patriotic American date: July 4th when the city collapses, and this year with Basques in the middle. This is a unique occasion.

Chef Javier Canteras has been enjoying success in Portland for some time with The Basque Supper Club, a pop-up restaurant (that is organized periodically in secret places) that, as the name indicates, is based on Basque gastronomy. Now, Canteras is taking another step and by mid-July will open the Urdaneta Basque Restaurant, with money that he one on the TV contest show Restaurant Startup. Here is his story.

The Chacabuco Basque club gathered more than 100 people at its anniversary dinner. The txikis from the Guillermo Larregui club will participate in July at the Dantzaris Gathering that is organized in Pergamino while, the club is getting ready to participate in the Rural Society Exhibit, as well as for its monthly meetings, and finally their trip to the Basque Country, for members and friends, in September.

In the coming days, Basque writers, Harkaitz Cano, Miren Agur Meabe, Rikardo Arregi, Karmele Jaio and Eider Rodriguez will visit Eastern Europe, to participate in the “Month of Author Readings” (MAC) literary festival. This festival has the special characteristic of being celebrated in four countries: Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and the Ukraine

Throughout 2016, muslaris in countries that participate in the competition have been celebrating their various national tournaments. Many of these are now complete, and the champions are now preparing for the international tournament that will be held in Donostia, October 8-15th, based at the Silken Amara Plaza Hotel. The tournament program has now been published for the competitors and also for those who will accompany them. The program is available here: www.ctme.eus.

The Euskal Jatorri Basque Club in the province of Misiones is in a very productive period, thanks to the combined work of its members. The most important project of the year, without a doubt, the children’s workshop. The club also organizes other events for the community, monthly food sales, and a film series. Among their celebrations, next Saturday, they will celebrate San Fermin with a dinner at the Rotary Club.
