Naroa Elortegi and Mikel Ibargoien, winners of the “Goazen Boisera!” contest

Naroa Elortegi from Gatika (Bizkaia) and Mikel Ibargoien from Urnieta (Gipuzkoa) are the winners of the “Goazen Boisera!” contest organized by the Basque GazteBizHitza site for youth.  This Saturday they will leave for Jaialdi in Boise and during their stay they will report daily on everything happening there, from the point of view of young people.  EuskalKultura.com spoke to them and they are anxious to get to know Basque-American youth.

Diaspora Basques: Jon Sarriugarte, the ‘aerospace-punk’ of Oakland, California, a former Oinkari dancer

Idahoan, former Oinkari and long-time California resident, Jon Sarriugarte (Boise, ID, 1963) is not a regular Basque. He is an artist, designer and creator. “I wanted to go to Jaialdi, but I don’t have time, I’m working on a spaceship,” he says, sharing information about his lifestyle as a blacksmith – or "metal magician" − who, following his dream of working with the “flexibility, durability, and simple beauty of iron,” made his trip to California and founded the company Form and Reform, in 1987. His field is original, totally free creatively that reaches fantasy with almost no limits.

It was an intense and historic weekend for the Basque community in Boise that thoroughly enjoyed every hour of the brief but unforgettable visit of Athletic.  Organizers of the event were very satisfied by the event’s success, as well as the match result, that covered Idaho’s capital in red and white. Basques in Gooding, Idaho celebrated their 34th annual Euskal Jaia and picnic (video)

This last weekend was a busy one in the Basque communities in the west.  The Chino Basque club in California hosted Begiz Begi, while Reno, NV and Gooding, ID celebrated their annual Basque picnics.  Even though the main attraction, for many was the soccer match between Athletic Bilbao and the Xolos from Tijuana in Boise, Idaho which we write about in a separate article.  Here’s a video of Gooding’s Basque festival.

The Beti Alai dance group from Mar del Plata travels this Friday to Euskal Herria where it will provide five performances

The dantzaris and musicians from the Mar del Plata Basque club will spend two weeks in Euskal Herria to get to know, and submerge themselves in the Basque atmosphere while participating in festivals and performing Basque and Argentine dances for the local community.  Performances will take place in Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Lapurdi and will begin this Saturday.

Athletic Bilbao received a warm welcome on its arrival in Boise where the Mayor himself, Basque Dave Bieter, as well as other fans dressed in red and white, along with members of the Oinkari Basque dancers were anxiously awaiting their arrival.  Today, the players will sign autographs at the Basque Center before their match against the Xolos of Tijuana tomorrow.

Arlette Oçafrain, Paris Basque Club: “When I travel I always check to see if the city or country has a Basque club and visit it”

Arlette Oçafrain has been living in Paris last 16 years, but she was born in San Francisco and raised in Donazaharre (Lower Navarre) and has lived in Japan.  She speaks five languages and proudly self-defines as a Basque of the Diaspora.

FEVA and HABE celebrate the 25 anniversary of Argentinan Euskaraz by publishing a book on Euskera in Argentina

The book will be presented in December during the International Euskera Day festivities and explains the situation of the Basque language in the country since the great immigration of the 19th century to today.  In the words of its author, Magdalena Mignaburu, “the project provides a solid documentary basis to get to know and fill the gabs in information that exist in this regard, taking into account the lack of bibliography that exists today.”

The Basque trio, Kalakan is in Quebec where they participated in the International Percussion Festival in Montreal July 8-12.  The group performed three concerts that were supported by the members of the Euskaldunak Basque club in Quebec, who attended with a large Ikurriña. The group also taught a Basque instrument workshop where participants enjoyed playing the txalaparta.
