The Eskualdunak Basque club in Montpellier, France celebrated its annual Basque Festival on September 20 and gathered a large number of members and guests, ready to have a good time. The majority of those attending were Basques from Zuberoa and Behe Nafarroa, established in this city for work reasons. All enjoyed a lively day which featured the music of Jean Louis Bergara.

On Sunday, September 20, a group of members of Euzko Etxea of New York went hiking on a day-trip to Harriman State Park, also known as Bear Mountain. The area is just an hour away by train from the Big Apple. “We often associate New York with Manhattan, chaos, and rush hour, but there is a lot of wild and beautiful nature close by,” said Leyre Areizaga, organizer, in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

The local Basque club, Euzko Alkartasuna, organizer of the great event, has published the program for Semana Nacional Vasca 2015 from October 26-November 1, that includes a choir meeting, a recital by Maral, FEVA meeting, talks, presentations, a huge dantzari gala, gastronomy workshops and sporting events, along with much fun and enjoyment for all.

This morning the 2015 edition of Gaztemundu began in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Every year, youth from various Basque clubs countries around the world participate in Euskadi in this activity where they are trained in various topics, while making their first contact often with the Basque Country where their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were born, and to which they continue to contribute even at a distance.

With the motto “Atzo, Gaur eta Beti” (yesterday, today and forever) the Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association (that gathers former Basque Sheepherders in America returned to the Basque Country) will pay tribute to the women who achieved transmitting and maintaining the Basque culture in America. This will take place at its annual festival next weekend in Bera. On the other hand, herders from Behe Nafarroa will celebrate their annual get-together on Sunday with a meal at the trinquet in Luhuso.

They will begin arriving in the Basque Country on Saturday; and their first tour of Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz will take place on Sunday for a Monday start of the first work sessions of Gaztemundu 2015 focused, as in all years that coincide with the World Congress of Basque Collectivities, on cultural and organizational management of Basque clubs. At the end of Gaztemundu, October 6th, the 15 participants will then join the World Congress where they will participate vocally but without a vote, which is reserved for elected representatives from each country.

The exhibit concludes its time in Tandil after a very successful inauguration ceremony attended by a large audience, including high schools, and will now travel to Tres Arroyos where it will be on display until October 5. The tour will then continue to Azul, Coronel. Pringles and Macachin and will arrive in Buenos Aires by mid-November.

Last Sunday, September 20, the Basque Club of Utah and the club's Triskalariak dance group participated in the annual Carmelite's Fair. Along with some members that sold txorizo, dancers from the Utah-ko Triskalariak performed too. “The carmelite nuns need help to continue their activity, and we are just one of the many groups that help them to keep going through the year. It’s a nice thing to do,” said Larry Osoro, longtime member and former president of the Club, in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

he has been only once in the European Basque Country, in 2006, but his heart beats Basque daily. A great-grandson of a man from Eibar, in Gipuzkoa, Carlos Gabilondo, at 65 years of age, tours Argentina screening and spreading Basque cinema. “This is my way of contributing,” he said.

This Saturday the village of Mendata, in Bizkaia, will turn into a town of the Far West, complete with a rodeo, a country dance and a sheepwagon parade. It is all part of a tribute to the Basque sheepherders of America that will include the planting of an aspen tree and music with Gontzal Mendibil and Kupela. Julian Iantzi will present the event.
