John O’Hagan publishes ‘When the Basques ruled California', a historical book about the Californian Basque power

Amateur historian and author John J. O’Hagan (San Francisco, 1941) has published his second historical book, entitled When the Basques ruled California. “An insightful, entertaining look at a time when a small, marginalized group of people had a disproportionate influence on history,” as stated on the publisher’s website. O’Hagan told EuskalKultura.com that, in fact, “the Basques had a great impact on why the US wanted to get California from Mexico.”

Archibaldo Uriarte: “A Basque Plaza will commemorate in Valparaiso the Basque contribution to the city”

The son of a Basque immigrant, he was born and raised in Valparaiso, but his Chilean life was touched with strong Basque feelings. Even his Chilean's mother's last name is Araya, a Basque last name common in Chile.  Archibaldo Uriarte is the President of the Eusko Etxea in Valparaiso. Basques in Valparaiso celebrate this year the Centennial of their first institution in the city.

In its 10th anniversary, Eusko Etxea in Corpus presented the awards in its “Amazing Stories” Literary Contest

Winners of the 7th “Amazing Stories” Literary Contest that were presented in Corpus Christi

As part of the award’s ceremony the children from Corpus Christi's Basque Club theater group performed a skit and the winners of the contest were also present to read a part of their texts.  An announcement was also made at the event that there is hopes of publishing an anthology 2015 and that an “Amazing Stories VIII” is also foreseen.

Euskal Jaia in Valladolid: Gure Txoko invited dantzaris from the Basque Country to perform dance in the streets of the city

The Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid, Spain celebrated its annual Euskal Jaia on September 26-27, including this year the participation of the Kezka dance group, based in Eibar, Gipuzkoa.  The dancers did two performances in the streets of the city that aroused the interest of the locals and the curious.  The festival concluded with a meal for members and friends along with the dantzaris at Gure Txoko.

“Basque Emigration: More than a Memory?” a day of debate on the Diaspora in Uztaritze

Invitation to the event, "Euskal emigrazioa: oroitzapena baino gehiago?"

A day of debate on the Basque Diaspora will take place in Uztaritze, Lapurdi on October 16, organized by Eusko Ikaskuntza, Euskal Kultura Erakundea and Eusko Diaspora.  The event is entitled, “Euskal emigrazioa: oroitzapena baino gehiago?" (Basque Emigration: More than a Memory?) and it will be recorded by Kanaldude TV.  Among the guests are US Bertsolaris Johnny Curutchet and Martin Goicoechea.

It’s been a long road for Emily Lobsenz (Connecticut, 1979) to see her first film, ‘Song of the Basques’, being screened nationwide. In fact, she started and finished several projects before this documentary about the Basques and their land was completely finished, in 2013. “It’s so wonderful to just finally share and show the film! I made it because I love that land, but I also wanted to share it,” said she, in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

The chamber choir from La Plata, Tous Ensemble, invited to participate in the International Choir competition in Tolosa

The group will represent Argentina in the Choir Competition in Tolosa where it will sing Loriak Udan by David Azurza and Maiteagok by Xabier Sarasola.  This won’t be their only performance while in the Basque Country since the group is taking advantage of this time to also perform in Santrutzi, Iruñea-Pamplona, Getxo, Astrain and Donostia.  Before they leave for Europe the group will say say good-bye to their local audience with a recital at the Euzko Etxea in La Plata on October 14.

The beginning of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Basque Cultural Center and its Lucio Echaniz Library began last Saturday

Last Saturday, on September 26, the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes, Argentina began a all year long list of activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Basque Cultural Center and its Lucio Echaniz Library that will take place in September of 2016. The festivities began with a performance by the Iruki Alaiak choir and a talk by Mikel Ezkerro.

“Loreak,” the first film in Basque selected as a candidate for the Oscars

Loreak, a film directed by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga continues to break barriers and open new roads in Basque film being selected this morning as a Spanish candidate for the Oscars.  Now, this poetic film about loneliness and isolation, will participate in the selection among five films from around the world for the Best Foreign Language Film.

Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea has begun selling tickets to the Euskal Herria Sona! 2015 Music Festival that begins on October 30. This is the 18th edition of the festival that showcases the latest in Basque music in the Catalan capital.  This year the poster includes performances by Oskorri (as part of its farewell) Anari, Jabier Muguruza and Korrontzi, among others.
