Saturday, October 3, was Sagardotegi or Ciderhouse night for the Basques in Boise. Around 190 people attended this year’s dinner, prepared, once again, by “friend and supporter, and an icon in the Basque food community” Jesus Alcelay, as expressed by Lael Uberuaga, spokeperson of the Oinkari Dancers, in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com. “It was amazing! It was very successful,” she added. The cider barrels were imported by Bereziartua, a well-known cider producer from the Basque Country.

The city of Mendoza became the site of an Open International Handball Tournament with the participation of local players and those from Parana and Ecuador. The “One Wall” games will took place at the Basque club’s fronton, inaugurated at the beginning of the year and named, “Horma Bat.” Winner were Leandro Rodriguez and Adrian Astorga.

Today is the last day to purchase vouchers for Semana Nacional Vasca Argentina in Macachin (Basque Argentinean National Week), hosted by the local Euzko Alkartasuna Basque club. The club is asking that those who yet have to respond, please do so by the deadline indicated. The club also invites danborrariak (drum players) from Argentine Basque clubs to join in the Tamborrada on Saturday, October 31. We publish the final program will all the last additions.

This coming Thursday, October 22, Goraki Abesbatza, from Donibane Lohizune (Lapurdi, Basque Country) will give a concert at the Wool Growers restaurant in Bakersfield, California, in order to celebrate the choir's 40th anniversary. It’s the first time the group will be performing in the US and as Beñat Castet, president of the choir, told EuskalKultura.com, “it makes us happy, because most of us have an uncle, grandfather or grandmother that came to America a long time ago.”

The Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association celebrated its annual meeting in Bera on October 3. The event gathered more than 500 people, including herders who worked in the US accompanied by their families. This year, women were highlighted, many of them accompanied their husbands on this American adventure, and they were especially recognized for their main contribution, thousands of miles away from the Basque Country, in the transmition of Euskera and love for the Basque culture to the new Basque-American generations..

The Argentina postal service created a Basque postmark at the Stamp and Coin Collectors exhibit organized by the Gure Txokoa Basque club in Cordoba. Besides exhibiting it, the postmark can be requested at post offices in the city during the month of October when mailing items. The local Basque club also let us know that they successfully participated in the new edition of the Community Caravan.

The Western Literature Association is celebrating its 50th annual conference at Harrah's in Reno, NV. This year's conference will bestow the Distinguished Achievement Award posthumously to Robert Laxalt and is featuring several Basque-related events. Today, there will be two sessions on Basque themes: "Robert Laxalt: Regional and Transnational Contexts" and "Basque Voices in the American West. Also, on Saturday CBS's Iker Saitua will give a lecture entitled "'Basque Bascos' to 'White Subjects'".

Her 'chilango' heart pounds fast when she “returns” to Euskadi. Born in Mexico and daughter and granddaughter of Basques from Eibar, Jaione Arrieta Galarraga has coordinated the online project, VascosMexico, for the last 13 years. She visited this week EuskalKultura.com's office in Donostia, but she will go back on time to Mexico DF to take part in the first 'Emakume Eguna,' a tribute to women that it's being organizing by the capital's Basque Club for next November 28th.

On the 20th edition of the ecology day known as “A Child is Born, a Tree is Born,” the Eusko Deya Basque club in Salliquelo realized its dream of planting a sapling of the tree that is the symbol for Basques in its city, and it did so on the occasion of the birth of member Juan Jose Vidaurre’s son, Patxi. The sapling was donated by Pedro Azcaray from Gernika and graces the Green space, along with other trees on the BMX trail.

Martin Goicoechea and Johnny Curutchet traveled to the Basque Country from the Western US, thanks to Euskal Kultur Erakundea, Bertsularien Lagunak and Bertsozale Elkartea, among other associations. Today, they will be in Zizurkil, where they will participate in a bertso-bazkari along with Andoni Egaña and Maialen Lujanbio (free admission). On Friday, they will particpate in a conference on the Diaspora and Baque emigration in Uztaritze.
