Etxe Maitea’s stand at the event in 9th of July to celebrate Cultural Diversity

As part of the Day of Cultural Diversity festivities, the Argentine city of 9 de Julio organized its 2nd Meeting of Communities, with the participation of communities from Italy, Japan, Spain, Ireland and the Basque Country.  To strengthen the presence of the Basque community, two Basque clubs attended the festival: the local Etxe Maitea Basque club and guests, dantzaris from the Beti Aurrera Basque club in Chivilcoy.

Artist in residence scholarships “Labore” for Basque artists in the Diaspora to spend time in Donostia

“Labore” Residencies will take place from January 25-March 18, 2016

The 2016 Foundation, in collaboration with Donostia Kultura and the network of Museums in Donostia-San Sebastian, has created the “Labore” scholarships for artist residencies in Donostia.  These scholarships are aimed at Basque artists, including those in the Diaspora (and International) that will take place in seven Donostia museums: San Telmo Museoa, Aquarium, Diocesan Museum, Eureka! Science Museum, the Rezola Cement Museum, Untzi Museoa-Naval Museum and Museo Real 100. Deadline to apply is November 16.

Basque culture and familiar traditions used as an example of the “immigrant nature” of the State of Nevada

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City, Nevada hosted a ‘Basque Family Cultural Celebration’ that included conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and even an Euskara class. “The purpose was to introduce the immigrant nature of Nevada by highlighting the Basque immigrants,” told EuskalKultura.com Deborah Stevenson, Curator of Education of the museum. “It was successful and fun,” she added.

They invite the community to try the new cider next week during the Semana Nacional Vasca.

Tomorrow the first “Meeting of Music from the North,” organized by the Artea Basque club begins in Mallorca

The Artea Euskal Etxea will bring music from the north (of the Iberian Peninsula) to the streets and plazas of Mallorca as part of the first edition of the “Trobada de Musiques del Nord,” organized by the club.  From Bizkaia the Basque music and dance group Dangiliske will play along with Talamh (Celtic music) and the Galician Gaiteros, Anaquiños.  There will also be txalaparta, Basque dance and the possibility to taste Basque food at the club’s stand.

Estibalitz Ortega: “In Madrid they attribute a seriousness to the Basques that always flatters”

She exchanged her Basque hometown of Laudio, in Araba, for Madrid to do her studies and that is where she found work and married.  An Audiovisual professional, she likes living in the capital of Spain, with her husband, Santiago, born in Madrid, and her son Aitor, Athletic Bilbao fan and her daughter Leire, fan of Real Madrid

“In the Footsteps of Euskera. The Basque Language and its Presence in Argentina,” in Azul

The exhibit “In the Footsteps of Euskera. The Basque Language and its Presence in Argentina,” created by the Delegation of Euskadi in Argentina and Mercosur, with the collaboration of HABE and FEVA, has been exhibited in various Basque club in the province of Buenos Aires.  On its way to Macachin, where it will be inaugurated on Monday the 26th, it can be visited in the coming days at the Cultural Center in Coronel Pringles.

Euzko Etxea of New York reclaimed the diversity of the Basques by celebrating the first Diversity Weekend

Between October 9 and 11, Euzko Etxea of New York hosted its first Diversity Weekend, aimed at reclaiming the plurality within the Basque communities, as explained to EuskalKultura.com by Aitzol Azurtza, organizer and former president of the club. The festival, an evolution of the Gayaldi, included several cultural activities, including two  film screenings, an exhibit and a book presentation, as well as a party and a dinner.

“Icons of Memory” an exhibit in Bilbao reviews the work of Basque exiled painter Miguel Marina

Painter Miguel Marina

“I lived for more than 40 years with a foot on either side of the ocean, but my memory always returns to the sweet, Green mountains of the Basque Country, and the songs…,” the painter, Miguel Marina wrote in one of the last entries in his diary.  Exiled after the war in France, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and the US, his work reflects the nostalgia of thousands of expatriates.  Tomorrow, his exhibit “Icons of Memory,” a tour of his work, will be inaugurated in Bilbao
