Tribute paid to members born in Euskadi at the Toki Eder Basque club who also named Mikel Ezkerro an honorary member

Mikel Ezkerro is now an Honorary Member of the Toki Eder Basque club in Jose C. Paz in the province of Buenos Aires

They called the tribute to members born in Euskadi “Tribute to our Basques."  The event took place on December 6 at the clubhouse and is part of the club’s end of year festivities.  Toki Eder has also let us know that they made Mikel Ezkerro an Honorary Member of their club.

For the twelfth time the annual gathering of the gastronomic group “Mikeldi” was held in Mexico.  After a year full of challenges and opportunities the group gathered with its treasurer, Mikel Merodio, as the host to break bread and to define the group’s direction for 2016 as the group’s spokesperson, Julen Garritz, told EuskalKultura.com.

Nerea Mujika, Gerediaga: “We have started a project to bring a different Basque club every year to the Durango Book Fair”

The Durango Book and Music Fair is already here and will open its doors on Friday.  This year the fair, the meeting place for Basque culture, is celebrating its 50th anniversary of strong ties with the Diaspora.  Now, it is making plans to strengthen that relationship inviting a different Basque club to participate at the fair with its own stand every year.  This is a project was begun with the collaboration of the Basque Government that will begin this year with the Barcelona Basque club being the first to participate as Nerea Mujika, president of the Gerediaga Elkartea told EuskalKultura.com.

The big celebration of the 25 years of Argentinan Euskaraz gathered 300 people in Buenos Aires

Great weather, a lot of joy and a large crowd at the birthday party for Argentinan Euskaraz

The celebration again gathered Basque students and teachers in the numerous centers over the years: those that were trained in Macachin in 1990, the ones that are today part of the Euskara Munduan; and students and teachers who over these 25 years have learned, taught and have loved the Basque language. As part of the program, two talks were given on the weekend by Patxi Baztarrika, vice-counsel of Linguistic Policy from the Basque Country, along with the presentation of the book Euskera in Argentina, Identity and Feeling by Magdalena Mignaburu.

The CBS honors William Douglass, forever linking his name to the center

The ceremony took place at the beginning of the month but we couldn’t let November pass without mentioning the special tribute that the Center for Basque Studies, at the University of Nevada Reno, paid to William A. Douglass as founder, for some time its professor emeritus, and always a respected figure. As a sign of its appreciation, the CBS decided to officially change its name to “William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies.”

Rafa Molina is from Durango.  At 54 years of age, he has been in Neuquen for about five years with his current partner from Argentina, who he met in Euskadi.  He is working to establish a Basque club in this city in Patagonia.

Mussche, the second novel written by Kirmen Uribe, translated into Chinese and Japanese

The writer from Ondarroa will travel next week to Pekin, Tokyo and Kyoto to present the Chinese and Japanese versions of his second novel, Mussche (Susa, 2012) or What Moves the World. depending the language. Its Spanish version was published by Seix Barral under the title Lo que mueve el mundo (2013). Uribe's works have been translated to different European languages and now to Chinese (Lijang Publishing House) and to Japanese (Hakusui Sha).

Portland, Oregon author David Romtvedt is back home from his second book-presentation tour in less than three months. He’s visited Montana, Colorado, and Idaho, but he has mostly given talks in his home-state, Wyoming, about his latest book: Zelestina Urza in Outer Space. “An absorbing tale about a Basque woman from Iparralde who settles in a small Wyoming town,” as described in the Center for Basque Studies' blog . “I didn’t want to write another version of the stereotype of all things Basque in America revolving around the lonely sheepherder,” added Romtvedt himself, in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

Deadline to apply for Udaleku 2016 Basque camp in Chascomus, Argentina is December 20

The Zingiratko Euskaldunak Basque Club in Chascomus has opened the application period for the 2016 edition of Udaleku or Basque summer camp.  The event will be held from January 5-9 and is aimed at youth between the ages of 12 and 16 inclusive.  The deadline to apply is December 20 and cost of the vouchers can be found out via email.
