The group of musicians and dance masters have signed an agreement of collaboration with the University of the Basque Country to promote traditional music and dance in a university setting, even though its activities will also be open to the public. The musician and dance masters from Aiko Sabin Bikandi, doctor of Ethnomusicology at the University of London and winner of the Premio max 2015, will be in charge of teaching classes. His first activity will be a dance workshop on December 15.

A hundred people gathered to celebrate the 66th anniversary of the Gure Etxea Basque club. The festivities began at 11am at the Plaza Martin Rodriguez and concluded in the evening at the clubhouse with a mus tournament, also truco and escoba. While preparing to say goodbye to 2015, members and friends of the club enjoyed an entire day of song, music, dance and a great Basque party atmosphere.

A group of Basques living in the southwest of the United Kingdom (mainly Bristol and Bath, but also Cardiff, Exeter…) have created the Bristol Basque Cultural Society that will be officially presented tomorrow. The event is open to anyone who would like to become part of the group. The Basque club is mainly comprised of young Basques who have immigrated to England to work. Its goal is to acquaint those in the area with the Basque culture and help Basques who come to the country.

Iñaki Arrieta Baro from Hernani has now been at the Jon Bilbao Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno for three months. He accepted the position which required him to leave the Basque Country with his wife and daughter and move to Donostia’s sister-city, Reno. The Basque Librarian in Reno is in the process of deeping in the reality of this library, considered by many the lung of the Basque Diaspora in the world.

The Chief of the Government of Gipuzkoa, Markel Olano, has sent a video message to the Basques in the Diaspora on the occasion of the celebration on December 3rd, of the ENE (Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna) or International Day of the Basque Language. Olano thanks his fellow citizens living abroad for the important contribution they made and they keep making from the different countries in the world where they live to preserve and to transmit Euskera. The Deputy General of Gipuzkoa also remarks the importance of the idea of "lingustic equality".

Eusko Ikaskuntza has awarded the ENE prize to the Associazione Culturale Euskara, for its work raising awareness of the Basque language in Rome and Italy. After a hard year, the association has received this award as an incentive to continue this effort that is now harder than ever. Tomorrow their Basque week will begin that this year is called “Euskal Aztia” and they will also publish two books translated into Italian Lettere ad Ainhoa, by Sarrionandia, and Robin by Xabier Erkizia.

It’s here. Today is the International Day of Euskera (ENE, Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna), that is paying a special tribute this year to euskaldunberris – or people whose first language wasn’t Basque but those who had to learn it, recognition of their important contribution. We have made prior references of the celebration of ENE in the Basque Country and other countries in the Diaspora. Today, we are including celebrations throughout Argentina.

From the beginning on Friday of the Fair, the Euskal Etxea in Barcelona will be in Durango, thanks to an initiative by the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad and Gerediaga Elkartea. The goal is to raise awareness of the cultural work done in the so called Eighth Basque Province. The Barcelona Basque club, carries out several music festivals, Basque film and literature series in the Catalan capital, making it a privileged platform for Basque artists and creators. Now, all of the musicians, writers, filmmakers, artists, etc that have been through the club are invited to visit them at their stand to publicize their well done work.

The International Day of Euskera and the programs organized around the world to celebrate it are at the Forefront of our news. Along with events in Argentina and other countries, we are also highlighting the conference that begins tomorrow in Montevideo called “Euskera Day – The Basque Book in America,” that will include the first meeting of Basque publishers on the American continent including Ekin, and Lauburu in Argentina, Euskal Erria in Uruguay; and the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies Press in Reno. Along with Basque Government support, this year marks the first time that the event also enjoys support from the Government of Navarre with the presence of its delegate in Brussels, Mikel Irujo.

The International Day of the Basque Language will be celebrated next Thursday, and as every year since its inception in 1949, Basque clubs all over the world will join in the festivities. The Basque communities in the Diaspora are the showcase of the Basque culture in many countries in the world, and once again, hundreds of men and women will dedicate time and effort to organizing activities to raise awareness and celebrate the Basque language. Following are some events in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Boise, Barcelona and Mexico, among others.
