The Basque Government approves 2015 Basque club grant awards

The Basque Government approved 2015 grant awards for Basque Clubs that will be published soon in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country at which point they become official.  A total of 50 Basque clubs will benefit from grants corresponding to both Chapter IV and another eight will benefit from grants under Chapter VII.

Basque writer Harkaitz Cano

The anthology Best European Fiction published every December is a selection of texts with the best European fiction to read in the New Year.  Among the texts of 29 European authors, editors have selected a text by Harkaitz Cano, from Lasarte, Mugaritz B.S.O. that unites literature and cooking with the collaboration of Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, translated by Amaia Gabantxo.

‘Oinkari Grams,’ a different Basque Christmas gift that can easily be exported to any Basque Club

Tomorrow, Oinkari dancers from Boise, Idaho will carry out the first ‘Oinkari Grams’ ever−a personalized and short Oinkari performance by request, at a previously selected place. Lael Uberuaga, spokesperson of the group, explained to EuskalKultura.com all the details and gave some tips to other Clubs that could be interested.

8 feature-length and 8 shorts display the Basque Country today at the Cinematheque in Montevideo

From ZINEBI, The Festival of Documentary Film and Shorts in Bilbao, to the Cinematheque in Uruguay, with the collaboration of the Etxepare Basque Institute, 8 feature-length and 8 shorts made by Basques will be shown these days in Montevideo.  The goal is to acquaint the country with films that present the current political, culture, and social situations in the Basque Country.  Some of the titles to be shown are: Asier eta Biok (Asier and I), Lasa eta Zabala (Lasa and Zabala), Umezurtzak (Orphans), El otro mapa de Abauntz (Another Map of Abauntz) and Gure Sor Lekuaren bila (Looking for our Birth Place).

Euskera Day activities at the Euskal Erria Basque club in Montevideo

The city of Montevideo became the site of a large program of events for the International Day of Euskera.  The main invitation came from the Euskal Erria Basque club that gathered distinguished individuals from the cultural work from America and the Basque Country.  At the same time, the Haize Hegoa Basque club was also the site of festivities of students from Montevideo and from San Jose.  Finally, in Salto, the ENE celebration will take place on the weekend of December 18 and 19.

As winter holidays get closer, Basque Clubs all around the globe get ready for celebrations, dinners, and get-togethers. Most of them include a kids’ favorite in their programs: a visit from Santa Claus, Père Noël, or the Olentzero. But, who is the Olentzero? We are still receiving videos of activities at Basque clubs for Euskera Day, and we have to say that this year they are superior in both quality and originality.  Here we highlight two of them: first from the Valentziako Euskaltzaleok where members took to the streets to encourage people there to jump into Basque (a brillian idea and easy to carry out); the second, form the Euskaltzaleak from Buenos Aires with a humoristic twist to learning nor-nori-nork with music.

Members of the Bahia Blanca and Viedma-Carmen de Patagones Basque clubs ready for the festivities to begin

To celebrate the International Day of Euskera and the 2015 end-of-year activities, the Beti Aurrera Berri Etxea Basque club celebrated the “Patagonian ere bai!” (In Patagonia too!) Festival.  The festivities were attended by a delegation from the Union Vasca Basque club in Bahia Blanca and as president Maria del Carmen Elzaurdia told EuskalKultura.com, “it was a great opportunity to realize that when we work together, nothing is difficult.”

For all of the students at the Euskaltegis in the Basque Country or worldwide, here is a very special document that came to us from the other side of the pond.  The students at the Euskaltzaleak Euskaltegi in Buenos Aires have invited us into their classes with this fun and imaginative video that they created to celebrate the International Day of Euskera, under the direction of their teacher Sabrina Otegui.  They speak Basque with a Basque accent.  Check it out!
