This coming Saturday, January 30, the Basque Club of Utah will celebrate its 33rd annual dinner dance, at St. Ambrose Hall. As Cirbie Sangroniz, instructor of the Euskal Etxea's Triskalariak dance group told EuskalKultura.com, “it is the first and the biggest event of the year, both for the dancers and for the Club.” A very special celebration that attracts a lot of media attention in the region, during a very special year: Udaleku 2016 will be hosted by this same Club.

Necochea is a city that is directly linked to Donostia, since the times of “Loco” Azua, when he saw its beaches and thought they resembled those in Donostia, establishing its first spa there, the Perla of San Sebastian, in 1885. Their neighbors laughed, but after only five years the city was attracting masses of tourists. The Loco’s passion for Donostia is still very much alive in the Basques of Necochea, and erupts each year during the week of San Sebastian, a party with Tamborrada, flag raisings and pintxo-potes in the middle of the Constitution Plaza included. The Mexico Basque club celebrated the feast of San Sebastian once again, this year on January 23, as one of the most anticipated club events and one that always includes a Tamborrada directed by Drum Major Alfredo Jover. “It is without a doubt one of the best parties of the year, it is also the first and what determines what the rest of 2016 is going to be like,” Josu de Garritz club president said.

Many Basque Clubs around the world celebrated Donostia-San Sebastian's most beloved feast, the Danborrada, when it was most conventient for them. Each Euskal Etxea, however, adapted the festivity to its reality. EuskalKultura.com talked to Itziar Albisu and Iñigo Ruiz, who were in charge of this celebration in New York and Quebec, respectively, to bring the unique feel of each celebration to our readers. “It's a very beautiful festivity,” in the words of Albisu. “participating, and you don't have to be from Donostia to love it.”

A show of lights and sounds, in which the public’s participation is key, are some of the few details revealed about tomorrow’s official opening of the year of Donostia 2016 European Cultural Capital. The ceremony was designed by Hansel Cereza, former member and founder of the Fura del Baus, and promises to surprise and excite. Around 50,000 people are expected on both sides of the Urumea river. They will unite their voices in singing “Baga, biga, higa,” by Mikel Laboa in one of the highlight moments.

Bartender Jay Kuehner, from The Cloud Room in Seattle, Washington created a cocktail based on Basque cider and mescal –a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the maguey plant native to Mexico– that has been chosen as one of the best cocktails of 2015, by The Seattle Times. “Is it the best drink in town?” asked Kuehner in conversation with EuskalKultura.com. “Who knows, but the group gathered around drinking it are sure to be of boisterous conviviality," he says.

Florida's House of Representatives reconvened a few days ago, to discuss this year's Budget. Amongst other topics, the situation and future of Jai Alai is also on the table. “We are in good spirits,” said Mercedes Mendive, active supporter of the sport and spouse of recently retired player Fernando Lejardi, during a conversation with EuskalKultura.com. “Things are going to work out in a positive way, but we'll have to continue fighting.” The meetings are scheduled to be finished by the end of February.
