The Basque Culinary World Prize is launched to recognize committed and transformative cuisine

The Basque Culinary World Prize was presented yesterday in Donostia-San Sebastian.  The award has been created by a group of  renowned chefs and the Basque Government, to award culinary initiative “that express the power of transformative cuisine.”  The winner will receive 100,000 Euros that should be reinvested into a project ‘directed to improve the society.”

Josette Daramy (Bakersfield, 1979) started dancing with the Kern County Basque Club when she was only five, but she had to stop to go to the University. Now, after a gap of twenty years, she's back. “Kristie (Onaindia) retired, and the Club was looking for a teacher so I told them I taught dances in the past and that I might as well do it again,” she said in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

Boise State University began its Basque Studies workshops this weekend

BSU, Boise State University began its Basque Studies workshops this Saturday and Sunday. They will be offered throughout the spring to students in different disciplines and departments like Basque, History, Anthropology, Sociology and Gender.  The workshop entitled, “Being American and Basque” taught by Dr. John Ysursa was the first of the 2016 session.

The work done by John Garamendi, California Congressman (D), was recognized and awarded by the Sabino Arana Foundation.  The newspaper Deia published this interview with the man who has served during his political career as the Deputy Secretary of the US Interior, Lieutenant Governor of California, California’s Insurance Commissioner as well as one if its senator for 16 years.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival looks forward to having Basque-Americans participating in their events

The festival will try to include as many sides of the Basque culture as possible, from cuisine to dances, especially focusing on the Basque language and its revitalization (Image: E.K.)

Voted one of the top tourist events in the United States, the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival features the Basques as an example of innovation by culture. Between the 29th of June and the 4th of July, and from the 7th to the 10th of July, almost half a million people are expected to attend this laud to multiculturalism, as said by James Mayer, Public Affairs Specialist of the festival, in conversation with EuskalKultura.com. Now the organization is looking forward to having Basque-American groups and individuals participating in their programs.

The choir from the London Company, Berwin Leighton Paisner almost made the finals of the “Office Choir of the Year” competition in the United Kingdom 2015 with the song “Txoria Txori” by Mikel Laboa and Joxanton Artze. Finally, the choir from another Company made it to the finals thanks to votes gathered on You Tube, but the director of the choir at the BLP, Maite Aguirre, was very satisfied with their record.  “As I am from Bilbao, it makes me very excited to have English people sing a song in Basque,” she told EuskalKultura.com.

Patxi eta Konpainia will begin a tour today taking Basque dance throughout France, ending in Paris

The Patxi eta Konpainia group, directed by dancer Patxi Perez, will begin a tour of France today in Colomiers (Toulouse) where they will teach people how to Basque dance with some open workshops that are fun and festive.  They will then share some dances and most likely some Patxaran in Montélimar and Basaçon, to end the tour on January 31 with a performance at the Paris Euskal Etxea.
