The deadline for applications closes on Monday, so make haste if you are interested! In addition, BSU also offers several grants for Basque students.

The first Herri Kirolak Picnic at the Euskal Etxea of Miami left us curious images last Sunday, like the aizkolari, and harrijasotzaile, sokatira and txinga competitions in a paradisiacal environment, on the sand and on the coast of a lake surrounded by tropical palm trees.  The festival included the participation of friends who came from both coasts, New England and San Francisco, and a great time was had.  Following is a complete photo gallery of the day.

This last Sunday, the Euskal Etxea of Miami celebrated its first Herri Kirolak (Basque rural sports) Festival. Boni Guenetxea, former Jai Alai player, Basque referent in Florida, founder of the catering company Paella Party and first volunteer and promoter of Basque activities in the area coordinated it. Basques from Neuquen invite everyone to the first informative dinner in hopes of founding the Euskal Etxea in Comahue

Meeting at a café in Neuquen where a small group decided to start taking steps towards establishing a Basque club in Neuquen (photoEuskalKultura.com)

The date is February 20 and the invitation is extended to Basque descendants but, above all, is for anyone wanting to participate and pay a contribution to the formation of a euskal etxea in this area of Patagonia. During the dinner, a summary of what has taken place so far will be given and decisions will be made regarding the next steps to take in order to meet the goals.  Once designed, club members will present it formally on March 26.

Last Sunday, writer Basque Mikel P. Ansa visited Berlin at the invitation of the local Basque club, to read extracts from his novel “Su zelaiak” (fire fields) at the local Museum of Ethnology.  The book is based on the experience of Basque solders in the trenches during World War I, and reading the passages included inserts of recorded songs by Basque prisoners of war during this conflict.

Last week, Aitor Zubizarreta (Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa, 1995) was named Cascade Player of the Week, after scoring 45 points in a win over Evergreen. That also made him the fifth best scorer ever in the history of this college in Idaho. After two complicated years in Portland, Oregon he now resides in Caldwell, Idaho: “It has not been not easy for me, but now I feel better, I feel I'm an important player for the team,” he said to EuskalKultura.com.

The Villa Maria Euzko Etxea brought Basque dances to the “The Whole World in Alta Gracia” festival

The Euzko Etxea Basque club in Villa Maria represented the Basque culture at the 29th edition of the “The Whole World in Alta Gracia” Festival

With a nearly 30 year career, the festival has become one of the most important in the Argentine province of Cordoba; the Basques couldn’t stay away from such an important event, so the dantzaris from various Basque clubs took turns to guarantee that the Basques were present. This year, for the third year in a row, the Euzko Etxea in Villa Maria represented the community in the parade as well as on stage.

For the second time in a row, the Eusko Txokoa in San Martin de los Andes accompanied its city on the anniversary of San Martin's foundation.  This year, they participated with new guests; the Basque buruhandiak, that surprised the spectators and opened carnival.

The winners of the 3rd Literary Contest, Letters from the Diaspora, went to Valencia and Tudela

Last Friday, Basque clubs in Valencia, Euskaltzaleok and Laurak Bat announced the winners of the third Literary Contest, Letters from the Diaspora, as part of their literary dinner.  In the Basque student category, the award stayed close to home, to Rocio Risquez Baeza from Valencia, while the Basque speaking category went to Ametz Oyon in Tudela, Navarre.
