The Irish Korrika has already begun: The Rith Race 2016 travels through Ireland in support of Gaelic

Last Friday, March 4, the 2016 Rith Race began, a version of Korrika that is done in Ireland in support of Gaelic.  This edition will travel more than 1.000 kilometers crossing the entire island to finish on March 14 in Dublin.  Rith means to run in Gaelic, a language that despite being official in the Republic of Ireland, is in a serious situation, especially with regard to its everyday use.  It is estimated that Gaelic is the first language for some 130,000 people.

An international conference will bring Reno, Berlin and New York together to analyze the legacy of Lehendakari Agirre

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the escape into exile of Lehendakari Agirre, after the fall of the republican government.  It was a dangerous trip, fleeing Franco, passing through Berlin and his ally, Hitler, heading for America.  This month of March (through June) an international conference will take place in Reno, Berlin and New York, remembering this trip and analyzing the international legacy of the figure of Lehendakari Agirre.

A new outdoor mural that praises the history of Basque sheepherders in Gardnerville has finally been installed

For the artist, it is "an honor" that so many members, associations, and companies in Gardnerville wanted to participate to finish the project (Photos: B.C.)

Muralist Beverly Caputo's new work, a Nevada-state-shaped portrait of a Basque sheepherder, has finally been installed on the East facade of the Mason's building, on Main Street in Gardnerville, Nevada. Caputo told EuskalKultura.com that after four years in the works, she is “very pleased that the mural is finally installed.” The 12x16 feet painting was inaugurated last week's Tuesday.

The popularity of One Wall is growing considerably and Argentina doesn’t want to be left behind.  That is why the Denak Bat in Mendoza has once again opened its doors to anyone wishing to practice and eventually compete in this sport that is softer than regular Basque handball (pelota).  Practice at the club’s fronton are being run by local pelotari Adrian Astorga, winner of the Belgium Holland open in 2015.

“Basque yourself:” delve into the Basque culture this summer with a course from the Etxepare and EHU (there are 20 scholarships)

Summer classes as part of “Basque Yourself” will be taught at the Miramar Palacio in Donostia

As part of the University of the Basque Country’s summer school options, Basque Yourself International Summer School is making its debut and provides a unique opportunity to delve in to the Basque culture.  The course will take place from June 26-July 15 in Donostia and will include top-notch professors: Bernardo Atxaga, anthropologist William Douglass, Kepa Junkera….Classes will be taught in English and tuition is 1,800 Euros (Etxepare and EHU will provide up to 20 scholarships).

Even though they sell a lot of lamb, especially to Basque customers, the JT demonstrated their proficiency in preparing any kind of meat (photos C.V.T. and J.T.)

The best beef in Gardnerville, Nevada is served at the J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room. At least that's what the Carson Valley Times' readers believe, since they've chosen the Basque restaurant as the winner of the Beef Wars, for a second year in a row. “I think we won because, first, we let the beef age as long as it really needs to and, second, because we cut our own beef at the restaurant,” J.B. Lekumberry, head chef and co-owner of the restaurant, told EuskalKultura.com.

The Gure Etxea Basque club in Tandil begins its 2016 activities including Euskera classes at the University

2016 Euskera classes at Gure Etxea in Tandil

In March the Basque diaspora in Argentina begins to move and offer programs and annual activities.  That is the case of Gure Etxea in Tandil, that started its choir practices this week, and who will open its classrooms next week to Basque language students.  Dancing will begin in April.  Among other news, Euskera will return to the Center University (Universidad del Centro), thanks to Basque club teachers.

The first Basque film series begins at the Euskal Etxea in Brussels with “Sanctuaire”

The Brussels Euskal Etxea will begin its first Basque Film Series tomorrow, with Sanctuaire.  This film is a co-production of French and Belgian TV based on the real events that took place in Iparralde during the GAL attacks.  The series will include three other films that will be shown every two or three months.

The 'Euskal Herria Plaza' Shopping Center opened in the north of greater Buenos Aires with allusions to the Basque culture

The new shopping center, located at the entrance of the closed neighborhood, Laguna del Sol, Partido de Tigre, has 46 shops on three floors.  As the designers explain, “The name Euskal Herria evokes European plazas in France and Spain, where the people gather in the central plazas, places that function as a place of recreation, relaxation, and also supply.”  Euskal Herria Plaza is now open to the public and during the year will host various events to its clientele.

The town of Lezama in Buenos Aires will be the site on March 23 of the first Argentine reunion of “The Oteguis/Otegis of the World”

The reunion will begin on Wednesday March 23 even though the organizers are sure that they it might be continue through the 24th.  Invited by Ignacio Otegui, originally of Leaburu, Gipuzkoa, but living in Washington DC area, along with Rodolfo Godofredo Otegui from Lezama, Buenos Aires, and Liliana Otegui, from Victoria, Entre Rios, the festivities will gather Oteguis and Otegis from Argentina, Uruguay and the Basque Country.
