Today marks the start of the 26th edition of the Nantes Film Festival that will once again dedicate a special place to Basque film, thanks to the “La Fenêtre Basque” (The Basque Window) section, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute. This year, two Basque films compete in the official section: Amama and Lejos del mar (Far from the Sea). In addition the Opera Prima section also includes two films made in the Basque Country: An Autumn without Berlin by Lara Izagirre and Pikadero filmed in Euskera by Scottish director Ben Sharrock.

The 2016 of the Calf Festival and Yerra Day in Ayacucho included a large representation from the local Basque club. On the one hand, Euskal Odola was the site of the festival’s queen candidate presentation, and on the other, they marched in the parade with a float with an original image of the Basque Country: a gigantic zahato or bota bag and the dantzaris. A community gathering took place in Emmett, Idaho on Monday afternoon, organized by Toni Berria, Patty Miller, Connie Urresti, and Carolyn Ruby. This Community Research Team is getting some important information about Basque families in Idaho and Oregon, from the beginning of the past century to the present days. “We want to create a comprehensive history,” said Berria in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com. “We want to know what brought them here, what they did… But, most importantly, we're going to ask them how they want to be portrayed.”

After the long process of its clubhouse renovation that took place over the last few months, Eusko Etxea in New York has announced the completion of the second phase of work and has invited club members to come for a cleaning day next Saturday at 10:00am in order to get ready for its debut next week on March 27, Aberri Eguna.

“Because it is the language that our ancestors left us,” “Because it is old, original and unique,” or simply “Because it is a reflection of the good climate that permeates the Basque club in our city.” There are many reasons to learn Basque; all of them different and all of them valid. And when you are ready, there are a number of possibilities at Basque clubs, worlwide but in this case we´ll talk about the ones in Argentina, where they have announced the start of classes for 2016. Come on and give Basque wings!

The widespread access to the Internet became one of the biggest revolutions in modern era and, as part of that, language learning experienced a huge change: anybody could have a real time conversation with a native speaker of virtually any language in the world, hence quickly, easily, and in a very affordable way, improving her or his language skills. Currently, NABO is offering two Basque language classes via Skype, one for students in Rocklin, California, and another one for a group in Washington D.C. “I was afraid it was going to be a little bit chaotic, but it actually works perfectly well. It's very convenient,” said Beth Carmichael, from D.C., in conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

Basque Mexican Maria Pilar Gurtubay is currently in the Basque Country recording the ETB’s program Origen in the process of searching for her Basque roots. Last Thursday, while she visited in Atxondo (Bizkaia) a farmhouse that used to belong to her family, she was surprised by a large group of family members who came from Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela and different places of the Basque Country itself. It was a new chapter for this saga that is already organizing another reunion in 2017.

The Publisher created in Argentina at the heart of the Arturo Campion Basque Studies Center has published two new titles, Training Pages by Cesar Arrondo, and Amnesty ’77 the Struggle of the Basque People work completed for his Masters by Mikel Bueno Urritzelki at the Public University of Navarre. Both books are added to the works published by the young publishing house last year and are now available to interested parties.

The next novel by Kirmen Uribe (Ondarroa, Basque Country 1970) will be published simultaneously in four languages: Basque (Susa), Spanish (Seix Barral), Catalan (Editions 62) and Galician (Xerias). The work is entitled “Elkarrekin Esnatzeko Ordura” (Time to Wake up Together) and tells the story of the agitated life of musician Txomin Letamendia, Basque Government spy during the Second World War, and his wife, Karmele Urresti. Uribe was inspired by the painting by Antonio Gezala, in 1927, entitled “Night of Ibaigane Artists".
