The Eusko Aterpea Basque club in the Argentine town of General Rodriguez prepared and sold 250 portions of its classic calamari Biscayan style, contributing in this simple, but important way, to the club’s budget. This was the first big activity organized by the newly-elected board. With Raul Taretto at the head, the club’s directors are anticipating a year full of excellent projects including a return to the “Adult Words” program.

Signups for Hator Hona 2016 were opened yesterday. The program will take place from July 15-August 7 in Necochea, Argentina. The proposal is directed to young Basque people who have knowledge of Euskera and various aspects of the culture of Euskal Herria. Anyone interested should send your information by April 29. The Euzko Etxea, site of Semana Vasca 2016, has also let us know that they have chosen the logo for the festivities.

Since Easter Sunday, through mid-April, Basque clubs in Argentina continue to celebrate the Day of the Basque Homeland. In the case of the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea, they will do so today, Wednesday, March 30 at 7:30pm with a talk by Dr. Maria Elena Etcheverry de Irujo Ollo. Along with this invitation, the centuries-old Basque club would also like you participate in its April and May activities.

On March 20, Palm Sunday, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid, Spain took an excursion to Aguilar de Campoo, a town in the province of Palencia. The club’s choir had been invited to sing at the local church and so off they went, accompanied by other Basque club members. After mass, the choir gave a recital of traditional Basque songs, with classics like “Aldapeko sagarraren” and Hara non dira.”

On Saturday, 30 people gathered to listen to a talk by historian, Xabier Irujo, at the Heritage Museum in Sparks, NV. The talk on the bombing of Gernika by co-director of the Center for Basque Studies, inaugurated the conference on the memory of Lehendakari Agirre, entitled, “The International Legacy of Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre’s Government.” In a conversation with EuskalKultura.com just before, Irujo said that the “worst lies of the 20th century were told,” about the event.

The Euskal Etxea in Cuba will once again celebrate Aberri Eguna with an entire week of events in Havana. The events began last Monday with the inauguration of Euskal Astea with a gathering of Basque students and friends of the club with a group of guests to continue the various offerings that include film, talks and food events, as well as a Mus tournament hosted by the Athletic Peña in Cuba. The program will conclude on Sunday with a big Aberri Eguna celebration that will include Basque and Cuban cultural expressions.

Euskal Herria and the Diaspora are getting ready to celebrate Aberri Eguna, as every year, the celebration coincides with Easter Sunday (this year March 27). Basque clubs like those in Madrid, Caracas and New York, to name a few, never miss this celebration. Other places that will celebrate include Lima, Santiago, Vancouver, Mexico, Sydney, London, Havana or Sao Paulo, and of course several places in Argentina (see separate article).

For the fourth year in a row, the Basque Fest Festival will transform Bilbao into the scene of a great celebration of Basque culture, much like Jaialdi in Boise or NABO Conventions in the US, or Semana Vasca in Argentina, with a huge program of activities, more than 140. The event is dedicated to visitors who come during Holy Week, as well as to the locals with concerts, exhibitions of Herri Kirolak (rural sports), theater, dances and expositions, as well as a txoko dedicated to Basque food and its quality products.

The death last Sunday, in a car accident, of member Francisco Bazurto was quite a blow for many members of the institution that is the little big family of the Eusko Etxea of New York. Another Basque, visiting from the Basque Country is in critical condition. After thinking about it, the EENY has decided to go ahead with next Sunday’s Aberri Eguna celebration, but with a different format dedicated to these two. Patxi’s funeral will take place on Thursday in Queens.
