After being presented in places like Carmelo and San Jose, Magdalena Mignauburu will inaugurate her traveling exhibit “Gure Arropa-Our Clothes” tomorrow in the Uruguayan capital. The tour completely sponsored by FIVU, the exhibit will take place at the Euskaro Basque club in Montevideo, where Mignaburu herself will give a talk on the characteristics and details of her collection tomorrow at 7pm.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has published a call for five Basque language and culture lecturers. The lecturers will teach classes at the following universities: the University of Chile and the Catholic University of Chile (Chile); the University of Havana (Cuba); the University of Cork (Ireland); the University of Pau (Iparralde), and the University of Masaryk in Brno (Czech Republic). A talk by her son, Michael Barkham who is also an historian, and a guided visited of the Archive of Protocols in Oñati allows her legacy to be better known. The Canadian researcher that settled in Oñati in 1972 is currently 89 years old and will be honored this afternoon at the University of Sancti Spiritus. Born in Rock Springs, Wyoming, Mikaela Goicoechea is 16 years old and is an enthusiastic Singer. Next Saturday, she will perform a recital in her hometown to raise monies to attend the New York City for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy’s High School Performing Arts Summer Conservatory.

For another year, now making its 21st, the Basque-Venezuelan community residing in Euskal Herria will meet in Galdakao to celebrate their annual get-together, greet old friends and catch up, The meeting will take place this Saturday with mass at the Santa Maria Church in Galdakao, followed by lunch.

The 42nd edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair begins today and will run through May 9, one of the most important cultural events of the year, anchored in the capital but with participation forma ll over the country. Once again, the Juan de Garay Basque Argentine Foundation will represent the Basque community, and will do so from Stand #1900 in the Yellow Pavilion as well as with talks and book presentations in the rooms designated for those.

The Mayor of Iurreta, Bizkaia, Iñaki Totorikaguena visited the US last week. He did so on behalf of himself, the Mayor, as well as all the citizens of Iurreta, including those in the Diaspora. He had been invited to Boise to celebrate the 100 years that Benito Ysursa settled in the city. The Ysursas in Idaho wanted to include representation from their ancestor’s hometown. They want to maintain those ties and continue to do so in the future.

Its title is “Euskara, muga guziten gainetik elkartzaen gaituen zubia” (Euskera the bridge that unites us beyond all borders) and tells the story of the Basque community in Boise in bertsos, with images of Jaialdi and the Basque Block. The video is part of the Bertsomovieda contest, organized in the Basque Country by the Arrano Kultur Elkartea in Beasain, and the video that gets the most votes will be named the winner. The deadline to vote is this Friday.

The Basque Government recognized a new Basque club in France yesterday, the “Association des Basques de Montpellier et sa región-Euskaldunak,” according to official sources. The Basque club is the fifth to be officially registered in France and number 190 in the world.

A new date for Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country 2016 that will be on Sunday May 8 instead of Saturday May 7 now, “due to the national march for the legalization of marijuana to the Congress being scheduled for the same time on Saturday, on Avenida de Mayo and Bolivar.” The date is now set for Sunday May 8 at from noon to 6pm on the Avenida de Mayo and Bolivar in the capital city.
