Calling all Euskal Etxeak: The trikitialri from Bilbao will arrive in Argentina in November accompanied by two singers and Basque percussionists from the group, Sorginak, ready to travel to cities in the interior. To complete his itinerary, his producer invites Basque clubs that think they are capable of organizing a recital with Kepa Junkera, in their town, to get in touch with them through the Delegation of the Basque Government in Argentina and Mercosur.

On April 16-17 the Gure Txoko Basque Club in Valladolid fulfilled one of its most anticipated events of the year, the visit to Euskal Herria. The group traveled this year to Bizkaia, where they visited the Urdaibai Reserve. In Gernika, the group visited the Juntetxea and the mythic Tree of Gernika, and places on the coast such as the hermitage of Gaztelugatxe Doniene.

“The (new) roll of the Basque Diaspora in the 21st Century” is the title of the course, organized by the University of the Basque Country under the direction of Imanol Galdos. Presenters include, among others, John Ysursa (Boise State University), Xabier Zubillaga from Necochea (former director of the Basque-Argentine Institute of Cooperation and Development), Aitor Arruti (Barcelona Euskal Etxea) and representatives of the Basque Government like Marian Elorza and Asier Vallejo. Along with the Laminiturri Association from Spanish Rioja, the Lagunt eta Maita Basque Club (LEM) in Pau, in Bearn, is the closest Basque club to the Basque Country. It recently held, on April 3, it main annual festival, and just before, on February 12, its General Assembly. The club was founded in 1967 and its members have already begun to think about the program of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

The Euskal Echea club has been created as a social, sports and cultural extension of the century-plus-old Euskal Echea Cultural and Charity Association. Students, parents, alumni, personnel and members of the clubs, as well as their guests are allowed to participate, in Llavallol. On the other hand, the Euskal Topaketak (Basque gatherings) are a proposal by the Department of Basque Language and Culture in Buenos Aires City. The second gathering will take place tomorrow with an attractive theme: gastronomy.

Mitch Gariador started working on the website 'Bridge to the Pyrenees' in 2009, as a means of sharing with the public data about the Basque immigrant community of Southern California “collected over 35 years,” as he explained in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com. The website has not been widely advertized “because I don't think I even uploaded 25% of the information we have.” But now, by adding these interviews, “we're ready to make the website known.” Along with Gariador, Jeanette Bidart, and Marianna Etcheverria are also conducting and filming the interviews, that are being shared with Memoria Bizia as well.

It is surely one of the ETB programs that has sparked the most international interest even before airing one episode. 'Origen' brings people from the Diaspora to Euskadi who are looking for their roots, and accompanies them on this process of discovery. The news of its recording ran like wildfire and the producer has received hundreds of letters from people wanting to participate. The first season will air in September and if it is well-received, they will continue to record new episodes.

During the two weeks that they will tour Euskal Herria, participants in this trip organized by the Itxaropen Basque club in Saladillo will get to know the most significant places in the country. But besides the itinerary that they are aware of, tour organizers have also prepared more than one surprise that no doubt will thrill the expedition. The party will arrive today at Loiola, in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa.

“Kultur Eragileak” is a series of interviews that were filmed and conducted with well-known cultural figures of Euskadi, where they are asked to reflect on what their cultural heritage is. The Delegation of the Basque Government in Argentina and Mercosur invite the clubs to not only become more familiar with the material but also the opportunity to complement the interviews with video-conferences to talk directly to some of the people who were interviewed.

The first edition of “Basque Yourself International Summer School,” supported by the Etxepare Institute and UPV/EHU will take place June 26-July 15 in Donostia and will feature first-rate professors: Bernardo Atxaga, Anthropologist William Douglass, Kepa Junkera….Classes will be taught in English and the cost is 1,800 Euros. Deadline to enroll is June 1 and there are still some scholarships available.
