Logo contest and annual program of activities at the Chascomus Basque club for its 25th anniversary

Visit from the Olentzero to the Chascomus Basque club in 2015

The Zingirako Euskaldunak Basque club in Chascomus will celebrate a quarter century this year and to celebrate it, they are inviting the community to participate in a varied program of activities that will begin now and will run through December.  To publicize the events, the locals are looking for an image that will identity the festivities and so that is why they have launched a contest to design the 25th Anniversary logo for the Euskal Etxea.  The deadline to submit your ideas is July 10.

Basque organist, Loreto Aramendi, is on a concert tour in the Northeast US

From Orio, Loreto Aramendi, has traveled to various locals in the Northeastern United States performing several concerts.  Aramendi plays a very special instrument that can’t be transported, the organ, so that is why the artist is traveling to churches where these works of art are found. Yesterday, she was in Bangor, Maine and this week she will perform in Lewiston, also in Maine.

The Koldo Mitxelena Chair at the University of Chicago analyzed the world of Basque contemporary fiction thanks to professor Mari Jose Olaziregi under the title, “Basque Contemporary Fiction: National Ghosts, Global Audiences.” Besides the academic program, this year also included a screening of the film Loreak where students were able to talk, via video-conference, to one of its directors, Jose Mari Goenaga.

Every April 26 the anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika is commemorated worldwide.  This year too, on that day and throughout the week, Basque clubs in Argentina join with Basque communities around the world, including those in Euskadi, to carry out various activities in remembrance of the tragic event and to express their solidarity with the victims.  Here, EuskalKultura.com, has gathered some pictures from some of these Argentine ceremonies.

The Centenario Art Night took place on April 23 in the Centenario Neighborhood in Pergamino

Organized by the city and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the festival is known as “Centenario Art Night,” gathering a large number of institutions and above all a huge following at the activities that are carried out outdoors.  The Lagun Onak Basque club in Pergamino, have participated in the event since the beginning, and they were also present in 2016 with a food stand, and dantzaris who guaranteed the community’s presence.

After 12 years as a librarian, Amagoia Guezuraga is currently teaching Geography and History at the Elorrio High School (photoAikormagazine)

Amagoia Guezuraga is a tireless worker who is committed to living her life with eyes wide open.  Forty eight years old and originally from Zamudio she has a degree in history and knows, like few others, her hometown, its customs and traditions.  This the fruit of many hours of research among documents and papers as well as through interviews that she began conducting at a very young age with people of a certain age, witnesses and protagonists of the past.  In addition to Ethnography, she also delves into fields like Genealogy and the Diaspora.

The Euskal Etxea in Madrid celebrated, for the fourth year in a row, the Basque Short Film Contest, where students at the Euskaltegi are the protagonists and the creators.  The contest is a big success, year after year, and the students, as well as the audience have a great time with the original proposals.  “It is part of our coursework, because it is a fun way to learn and practice Euskera,” Errukiñe Olaziregi, club teacher tells EuskalKultura.com.

The libraries in Getxo have sent their request on social media

The libraries in Getxo, Bizkaia came to us with a request for writers originally from Getxo, or those who have a connection to Getxo in the Diaspora.  If you are one of those who have published some text in Basque, Spanish or any other language, send a copy of it to the library for this very special project.  The works can be narrative, drama, poetry, essays, stories, etc.
