Seventy five years ago, Basque president Jose Antonio Agirre arrived in Berlin, which at that time was fully under Nazi control. It was during a dangerous scape to exile that took him to the wolf’s mouth, before being able to leave for America. In June, a series of activities, organized by the Berlin Euskal Etxea and the Etxepare Basque Institute will commemorate the anniversary, while analyzing the political legacy of Agirre and its validity in today’s world from historical, political and artistic points of view.

An agreement between both Chambers of Commerce was set this last week during a visit to Idaho by a Bizkaian business delegation, led by the Deputy of Economic and Territorial Development, Imanol Pradales. Ten companies were represented on the trip to Boise where they participated in nearly 70 meetings with some of the main businesses in Idaho in the energy, automotive and food industry sectors.

Invited by event organizers, Laurak Bat Basque club, representatives of the popular initiative Gure Esku Dago were present at “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” 2016 as they have been for the last two editions. This year’s slogan was to support, via symbolic vote, the referendums that will take place in 34 localities of the Basque Country on June 5.

Two Basque soccer teams, Real Sociedad and Eibar, will visit the US this month and they have already organized some meet and greets with the Basque community, like the Eibar team with the Basques in Las Vegas. As well as other Basques in the Diaspora also follow the matches passionately, despite the distance and the time changes. Some have taken advantage of the visit to propose marriage to his girlfriend (video to follow). We will let you know how to contact both teams.

The Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) published on Wednesday May 11 the Resolution dated April 29, 2016 by HABE’s director general awarding grants to Basque clubs for Basque classes to be taught October 2015-September 2016. The total budget of 219,996 Euros was distributed among 30 Basque clubs in 14 countries. Zazpiak Bat in Vancouver, Canada received the smallest award at 1,102.50 Euros while FEVA received the largest at 65,236.50 Euros.

EuskalKultura.com is launching another raffle for its readers today. Prizes include: Aita deitzen zen gizona (A Man Called Aita) a book in Basque and verse by Basque-American Joan Errea; CD and book Boga boga a classic with traditional Basque songs of the sea, with sheet music, lyrics and audio; the double CD Korrontzi Getxo by the Getxo folk group Korrontzi, a musical luxury; and an assortment of stickers with Basque designs.

The Basque community in San Pedro, Argentina has begun to reactivate its Basque club and did so with a great activity: it opened a Basque class taught by Bego Tisera. Additionally, members of the Ongi Etorri Basque club have other projects in hand over the coming months including a short film series, conferences and the celebration of the club’s 11th anniversary with a gastronomic event.

Participants in the Bilbao-Bordeaux 2016, organized by the Bordeaux Basque club spent three days on the road. They arrived to Bordeaux last Saturday, tired but happy, and received a great welcome that also included a txaranga. The celebration included the presentation of certificates form the Basque club. Additionally, the club also held a talk on the regions of Europe this week that generated great interest. Following galleries of both events.

After their soccer season is over, Eibar will pack their bags and leave for the US where they will be on a short tour of friendly games. On May 22 they will play in Philadelphia against the Philadelphia Fury and on May 25 they will play the New York Cosmos in Las Vegas. The team invites the Basque community to come see them at these games and cheer for them.

Joining in on similar ceremonies in other places around the world, a group of people in Berlin, Basques and Germans, commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika by German and Italian aircraft, allies of General Francisco Franco, with a simple event that took place in the Guernicaplatz. They laid a wreath of flowers and read poems in Basque and German with live music in tribute and memory of the victims of the fatal episode.
