The audience at the Living Traditions Festival had no idea what was going to happen….Cirbie Sangroniz, dantzari and director of the Utahko Triskalariak Basque dance group of Salt Lake, danced the most emotional Aurresku of her life before taking a knee and asking her girlfriend, Amanda, to marry her. The other dantzaris in the group accompanied her in the nerves, and excitement of the moment, and the answer was…watch the video!

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (BOPV) published on Friday, May 27th included a resolution from May 18 that opens the call for aid for Basque clubs to take care of and assist members in situations of extreme need abroad in 2016. The total budget allocated is 202,000 Euros. This officially opens the application period for these grants.

The deadline to enter this month’s raffle for four wonderful prizes ends in afew days. Prizes include: Aita deitzen zen gizona, written in Basque and in verse by Basque-American Joan Errea; CD and book Boga boga a classic of traditional Basque songs of the sea, with sheet music, lyrics and audio; the double CD Korrontzi Getxo, by the group of the same name, a musical luxury; and a large assortment of stickers with Ikurriñas and other Basque motifs.

The Laurak Bat Club in Valencia was the scene last week of the “Navarre, Artisanal Gourmet,” gathering organized by the Government of Navarre in hopes of spreading the promoting the variety and quality of gastronomic products from the province under the brand names of “Reyno Gourmet” and “Alimentos Artesanos de Navarra.” This traveling exhibit is currently touring several Spanish cities that have Navarrese clubs in them, according to government offices.

The Eusko Etxea in Caracas celebrated its General Assembly on May 21, where the board discussed work that was carried out in 2015. Among the achievements of 2015 are major improvements made at the clubhouse this last year, as well as developments in communication with a greater presence of digital platforms.

Over the last few days, two Basque soccer teams, Eibar and Real Sociedad, have been on tour in the US to play various friendly matches. During their stay, they have also taken advantage of their time to gather with the Basque-American community. Eibar, for example, visited the New York Basque club just after landing in the country, and also met Basques at the Lagun Onak Basque club in Las Vegas. Real also visited the San Francisco Basque club and played on its fronton. Following is a photo gallery.

The Basque club in the Argentine province of Misiones doesn’t have its own clubhouse and so they have signed an agreement with the Rotary Club so that they can use their facilities. The Euskal Jatorri Basque club will hold monthly food sales to raise money to reshape the locale. The first sale was very successful with more than 150 servings sold.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Bryan Osoro is a member of the Utah Basque Club and former Utah-ko Triskalariak Basque dancer. He loves mountains and climbing. Last Sunday he climbed Everest, making the ascent the seventh and last one in his goal of climbing the seven highest peaks in the world. This interview was conducted by satellite phone.

It is called the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and this year it’s going to be a huge Basque gathering and festival in the heart of the United States with the Capitol building on one side, and the Washington Monument on the other. The festival will run from Jun 29-July 4 and then again on July 7-10, coinciding with the Fourth of July. Some Basques and a barrage of Americans will participate in the festival. This year only, and so not to be missed!

With La Odisea de Xabiertxo. El Ultimo Paquebote (The Odyssey of Xabiertxo. The Last Steamer) the Basque Publisher Ekin continues its revival that took place in 2015 reflected in the publication of Contraviaje. De Nueva York a Gernika pasando por Berlín (Return trip from New York to Gernika Passing through Berlin); Martin Ugalde Cartografias de un Discurso (Martin Ugalde, Cartographies of a Speech) and Historia de Radio Euskadi (The History of Radio Euskadi). It director, Maria Elena Etcheverry tells EuskalKultura.com that “during the last few years, publication was discontinued, but the importance of Ekin and the work that it has been done is a commitment for us.”
