The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) published the call for grants aimed at Basque Clubs – Euskal Etxeak to finance operating expenses, activities and building and remodeling projects (infrastructure) in 2016. The total budget of 862,307 Euros correspond to 782,307 for Chapter IV and 80,000 to Chapter VII. The deadline to apply is July 26. [UPDATE 07/01/2016: the new data is July 23]

HABE technician, Kinku Zinkunegi, is on a tour of several American Basque clubs, as part of the Euskara Munduan Program. After traveling to Cuba and Mexico, this weekend he will be in San Francisco, where the Basque Club Euskera teachers from the US and Canada will gather to evaluate the development of their courses and new proposals.

In a week July begins and the Diaspora is also getting ready for San Fermin. The Gure Txokoa Basque Club in Azul will do so on July 7th with mass and a dinner open to the community. Previously, and to conclude the June activities, the Basque Club will welcome tomorrow Graciana Goicoechandia, who will give them a talk on her experience after being chosen to receive the Global Teacher Prize.

The New York Times published an article a few days ago by Stephen Heyman about designer, Jean-Louis Iratzoki, originally from Iparralde, who collaborates and works jointly with another Basque designer south of the border, Ander Lizaso. The title, “Jean Louis Iratzoki, Basque Designer who Defies Political Divisions,” corresponds to the Spanish NYT translation, while the original is entitled, “A Designer Unites the Basque Country.” This is the article.

This is one of the Bordeaux club’s most important dates, every June 21 they take to the streets to celebrate the Music Festival and the summer solstice. This year, the program of activities also included concerts by the Bestalariak Choir, Basque and Occitan dancing and a public dance to the music of Baga Biga. There is no doubt that the Basque club met its goal, getting everyone to sing and dance. Following a photo gallery of the event.

From today through the weekend, euskal etxeas in Argentina and Uruguay will celebrate the Winter Solstice with multiple activities. The major attraction will be the San Juan Bonfire, but in addition there will be dancing, music and hot beverages for those who come to enjoy the show. Based on the true story of Migel Joakin Eleizegi Arteaga (1818-1861), the children’s opera Altzo the Giant comes to Mexico to the delight of children and adults alike. This work deals with issues like loneliness, tolerance, love of nature, and nobility of spirit. With music by David Azurza, texts by Koldo Izagirre, and puppets designed by Nestor Basterretxea, the staging work is done by the Mexican company Figurat S.C.

Yesterday, the third and last presentation of the book Somos Vasco-Argentinos. A recuperation of the historic memory took place at the Donostia Aquarium, after previous presentations in Baiona and Bilbao. The work has been published by the Basque Government as part of the Urazandi collection, dedicated to Basque Diaspora topics, and compiles a selection of presentations, comments, proposals and material generated at congresses in Argentina about the Basque-Argentine theme.

The Euskal Sustraiak Basque Club in Trenque Lauquen celebrated another anniversary by organizing a dinner for all of the club members. During the dinner, founding club members, Celia and Jose Echaniz, were recognized. The festivities will continue on Sunday thanks to the Basque Club with a dance performance and the burning of an effigy to celebrate San Juan.

On June 11, American Anthropologist, historian and specialist in Basque studies, William A. Douglass, presented Vascos en Cuba in Havana, the proceedings from the 2015 Euskal herria Mugaz Gaindi conference that also took place in Havana. The presentation was attended by Asier Vallejo, Director of the Basque Community Abroad, and Renato Garcia Eguzquiza, President of the Basque club in Havana.
