This month a group of the Argentine branch of the Urruty family, originally from Zuberoa, will travel to Euskal Herria to reunite with family members there. The last name goes back to 1740, when their grandfather immigrated to Argentina from Mitikile-Larrori-Mendibile, in Zuberoa. The family has been working for several years to reconstruct its family tree, with the help of the Euskal Argentina Association, and has been able to unite descendants on both sides of the Atlantic.

Invited by the local Euskal Txokoa Basque club, the city of San Martin de los Andes was the site of the 1st gathering of Basque clubs in Patagonia, attended by representatives from the clubs in Neuquén, Viedma-Patagones, Puerto Madryn and Bariloche, along with the local hosts. The initiative that hopes to strengthen ties between these clubs and promote joint projects, was very successful and wasn’t only supported by FEVA and the Basque Delegation, but also by the local and provincial governments.

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is still being celebrated in the US capitol, this year celebrating the Basques and their culture. In regards to the first part, June 29th until today, expectations have been met and the provisional evaluation of the event is very optimistic. This weekend, a sapling of the Tree of Gernika was planted in the Capitol Gardens and today, weather allowing, will be a very busy day coinciding with the 4th of July.

The Jolasak.eu website provides internet users a selection of games and apps in Euskera that they can play and spend some time with. The games include topics like bertsolaris, and a Basque cooking game, regattas….All the games are free and the website also includes other resources like short films in Basque.

The main goal of the activity is the parents and family members can see for themselves what the children learn at the club and the fun that they have. “But we also have another goal, that is to attract these children’s parents, that is to say, so the adults also come to the club,” club president Francisco Urbieta explained to EuskalKultura.com. The next event at Hiru Erreka will be the celebration of San Fermin this Friday, July 8.

The Directorate of the Basque Community Aboard has contacted EuskalKultura.com to let us know that the deadline for Basque Government grants for Basque clubs has now changed from the one they first anounced, July 26, to July 23. So if your club is thinking in applying, keep the new date in mind!

Two youth from the Basque Country, who traveled to Villa Maria especially to participate in the exchange, are in charge of the activities. For two weeks, the two Basques have taught classes in music, dance, Euskera and gastronomy to members of the Euzko Etxea that is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. To conclude the program, the locals will celebrate San Fermin on July 16th.

The San Juan bonfire is lite in various parts of the world to maintain the tradition that is as old as it is attractive. In Argentina, the Basque clubs have been celebrating this annual event, for some time, and organize wonderful activities to welcome the winter along with the community. This Saturday NABO will hold its Annual Convention in Chino, California, hosted by the Southern California Basque Club and attended by delegates from all the Basque clubs. After the downpour the night before, the organization wasn’t sure about the weather, but luckily the sun came out yesterday and accompanied the inaugural day of the 2016 Smithsonian Folklife Festival that is dedicated to the Basques. It was an exciting start, and even if the larger crowds are expected on the weekend, especially on Monday, the Fourth of July. Yesterday’s events took place in a wonderful festive atmosphere, with much participation from the visitors as well as the exhibitors.
