Last weekend delegates of the Basque Clubs of North America gathered in Chino, California, where the Southern California Basque Club hosted their first ever NABO Convention. In addition, the club also celebrated its 70th Basque Festival, with a great atmosphere and a performance by famous Basque rock band Gatibu. Check the photos, next.

Basque exhibit as part of the “Flavors of Distant Lands, an Introduction to Other Cultures” series

The series “Flavors of Distant Lands, an Introduction to Other Cultures” took place at the Cultural Space and Museum “Al pie de la Muralla” of the Uruguayan capital, aimed at giving communities from elsewhere the opportunity to disseminate their customs, especially in the area of food.  Haize Hegoa in Montevideo participated with typical dishes, costumes and Basque music and dance.

These past days have been very special and symbolic for many Basques and Basque-Americans attending the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC. One of these special moments was the plantation of a sapling of the Tree of Gernika in Capitol Hill. This a cronicle of that written by journalist Sara D. Wire and published by the L.A. Times.

Students from the Basque Country visit Euzko Etxea of New York, on their way to Boise for a summer exchange

At the end of June, a group of students from the Basque Country visited Euzko Etxea of New York. They were greeted by club members Enrique Arana and Ane Marie, who told them the story of the center, as well as many anecdotes of the Basques of New York. The students were on their way to Boise, where they will spend some weeks this summer learning English and getting to know the rich local Basque heritage.

From the province of Misiones, the Eusko Etxea Basque club in Corpus Christi organized its annually “Basque-Argentine Culture Festival” in honor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.  This year the festivities will take place July 29-31, and will include a large program of activities that will include film, talks, religious ceremonies, and friends getting together.

The Denak Bat Basque Choir in Cañuelas celebrating its 20th anniversary

With a career that spans two decades, the Basque choir in Cañuelas is a mainstay at the Euskal Etxea when it comes to disseminating the Basque culture in the city and the area.  In spite of its long career, the group maintains their young spirit and are always open to new proposals.  Directed by Maestro Santiago Lopez, the group is now organizing a new gathering of Basque choirs beginning on August 27, at the Denak Bat Basque club facilities.

Evaluation of FEVA’s monitor workshop and invitation to “Reflecting to Grow”

The workshop was aimed especially to anyone who is responsible for children in the Basque clubs and was evaluated by participants as being “very successful.” Basque club representatives didn’t only have the possibility to learn contents and methodology, but they also were able to share experiences with their peers in other clubs.  Following its annual program, FEVA also invites everyone to the “Haztearren, gogoeta" (Reflecting to Grow) conference on August 6-7 in Rosario.

San Fermin begins today with the txupinazo in Pamplona that extends to the entire Basque Diaspora

Today at noon, Iruña will pull the trigger on San Fermin 2016 with the rocket launch.  The festivities will take to the states in the capital of Navarre and will paint them in red and white over the coming days.  The Diaspora, for another year, will join in the party from a distance, with several celebrations at Basque clubs in Argentina, Shanghai, London, and Boise…. It’s halftime at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and so far everyone is very satisfied with how it is going (videos 02)

The second half of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival dedicated to the Basques will resume July 7-July 10 (photoEuskalKultura.com)

Yesterday, July 4, marked the halfway point at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2016, which has clearly marked the city with a Basque touch over the last week.  Everyone is very satisfied with how it is going, according to sources that EuskalKultura.com has talked to.  Yesterday’s rain forced some changes and an earlier closer of events, but besides that everyone’s delight was obvious.  Here are some more videos.
