The Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo, Brazil has opened the submission period for works in their first Photography Contest. The theme is “Our Euskal Herria” with photos being accepted by club members, as well as visitors and friends or members of other clubs. The best 12 photos will be chose to be voted on and will be published in the Eusko Alkartasuna’s 2017 calendar.

Once again the Venezuelan Basque club in Carabobo celebrated San Fermin, a large event that gathered more than a hundred people including friends who came from the Eusko Etxea in Caracas. The festivities featured young bulls. The boards of directors of both clubs gathered to work on several joint projects, combining business and pleasure.

Today and tomorrow, at the heart of the University of the Basque Country’s summer course offerings at the Palacio Miramar in Donostia, will be the course entitled, “The (New) Role of the Basque Diaspora in Euskadi in the 21st Century.” Presenters include: Alexander Ugalde, Asier Vallejo, Guillermo Dorronsoro, Imanol Galdos, Ivan Jiménez, John Ysursa, Josean Muñoz, Marian Elorza, Patrick Fitzgerald, Unai Lauzirika and Xabier Zubillaga.

Biscayan chef Eneko Atxa, joins the growing list of Basque restaurants in London, with the “Eneko at One Aldwych” that he will run beginning in September in the One Aldwych Hotel. Atxa is one of the highest ranked in Basque cuisine with three Michelin Stars at his restaurant Azurmendi.

The renaming ceremony took place at the Euzko Etxea in La Plata and complies with the aim of the members of the Studies Center to pay tribute to the one who created the basis for the cooperative movement in Mondragon, Fr. Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta. Attending the event was special guest and representative of the Arizmendiarrietaren Lagunak Elkartea-ALE (Association of the Friends of Arizmendiarrieta), president and economist from Gipuzkoa, Miguel Angel Laspiur.

On July 9th, the Bicentennial of the Declaration of Argentina’s Independence was celebrated throughout the country. Official events, however, were held on the weekend and included the presence, among others, of the communities from abroad. The Basques didn’t miss the date and waved the Ikurriña at ceremonies and in parades. Following is a photo gallery of some of the Bicentennial celebrations and its Basque contribution.

Through Antzinako, the association of genealogists in the Basque country, were found out about www.entradadepasajeros.com.ar that gathers more than 300,000 registries of immigrants who went to Argentina during the 19th century. The work of gathering and publishing this data online, was done by volunteers who are genealogy fans.

The work in the lineup in Argentina. Through a series of slides and a letter, and using the principles of observing the cosmos, seeks to reconstruct the history of a family in Argentina of Basque origin, under the assurance that “all stories are interesting, because every family holds the key to understand the secret of love, procreation, ultimately, of the human species.” “Astronomos Vascos” (Basque Stargazers) can be seen starting on Friday at the Excentrico de la 18º Theater in Buenos Aires.

Over last weekend, the Diaspora joined in the San Fermin festivities and did so carrying out several varied activities. Nevertheless, all had one thing in common: red neckerchiefs around a rickety, or the gigantes and cabezudos, or dantzaris. In Argentina, the Basque and Navarran clubs took a break from their daily routine to lift their glasses, and botas, in honor of the Saint.
