The agreement between CONICET in Argentina and the Etxepare Institute will begin to take shape in September

The first activity as part of the agreement will be the participation of Iñaki Bazan, History Professor and Dean of the College of Humanities at the University of the Basque Country, in the International Conference of Medieval studies organized by CONICET.  After the conference, Bazan will also teach a course on “Religious Dissent in the Medieval Basque Country.”  Both activities are aimed at university students and specialists and will take place at the CONICET headquarters.

“Since we were children, we knew that there was a cardboard box in Amama’s (grandma’s) room full of letters.  Some years ago, I digitalized them and shared them with my aunts and uncles, because paper doesn’t last forever.  The desire to do something with them came later.  I showed the material to Xabier Irujo and he encouraged me to continue, by then I had already started writing something….” That is how Benan Oregi talks about the beginning of this book that introduces his grandfather, the nationalist councilor in Soraluze, Gipuzkoa, Benantzio Iñurrieta, and the entire repressed generation after the civil war of 1936.

Semana Nacional Vasca 2016 in Necochea November 7-13

The Euzko Etxea was passed the baton for the organization of Semana Vasca 2016 by Macachin where it took place last year, and has been getting ready ever since. So that Basque club delegations can start planning their trips, the organization has published the price of the vouchers.  They have also taken advantage to let us know about another one of its great initiatives: the Hator Hona Program.

Organizers have set the date for Jaialdi 2020 in Boise, Idaho: July 28-August 2

With the phrase, “Mark your calendars! We are excited to announce that the next Jaialdi will be held on July 28-August 2, 2020!”  This is the response by organizers to online questions regarding the celebration of the next huge Basque Festival that takes place every five years. Anyone wishing to attend should mark their calendars, and start saving money and making plans to visit Boise during these dates.

Basque-Argentinean, Arantxa Anitua, is the Diaspora Representative on Basque Government’s Foreign Policy Advisory Board

The president of the Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires, and FEVA Vice-President was already an elected representative to serve on the Basque Government’s Advisory Board of Basque Collectivities.  Now, appointed by Lehendakari Urkullu, she is also a member of the Foreign Action Advisory Board. Yesterday, Arantxa Anitua took part in the first meeting of this new body that hopes to become “a meeting place between the Basque Government and civil society” in regards to Basque internationalization.

A colorful Txupinazo kicked-off the San Fermin festivities in Pergamino

The community response was very positive: a huge audience gathered in the pedestrian area of San Nicolas to enjoy the Basque music and dancing.  Also joining the local Basque club were the Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco and the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes.

The Winter Barnetegi and teacher training concluded successfully in Mendoza, Argentina

Managed by HABE, the Euskara Munduan Program for the 2013-2016 period had its 8th intensive course from July 16-23 in Mendoza.  Organized by the local Basque club Denak Bat and FEVA, the Barnetegi and teachers’ training, coordinated by Kinku Zinkunegi has come to a close.  FEVA’s president, Hugo Andiazabal traveled to Mendoza to express the federation's support for the program.

July 31 is the Feast of Saint Ignatius, patron Saint of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, festivities that have a long history in many Basque clubs.  They, for another year, have organized various activities to mark the occasion. Events in Boise, ID deserve special recognition. There it is one of the most important dates of the year, and the festivities run for days.  There will be events in Santiago, Chile, Mexico City and in cities in Argentina like Necochea, Arrecifes, Roldan and Corpus Christi to name a few.

Two job offers for Basque chefs have come to us.  The first is from the Barcelona Euskal Etxea, looking for a Basque chef for its Txoko.  The second, is from an established Basque restaurant in the Argentine capital who would like to hire a cook and kitchen assistant, paying particular attention to the experience in relation to the world of fish and seafood.  More details in the article.
