At an event organized by the local Basque club, Olga Leiciaga presented her books, Sowing and Harvesting and Crossing Barbed Wire and Opening Gates. In both texts, the author reminisces about anecdotes in her life, in her hometown of Saladillo as well as where she currently lives, in Corpus Christin, in Misiones. The stories reveal the influence that the knowledge of being a Basque descendant had on the author. Remember that Leiciaga is part of the founding board of directors of the Basque clubs in both Saladillo and Corpus Christi.

The exhibit was inaugurated on Monday at the Hall of Honor at the Legislative Palace in the city of Buenos Aires, where it will be open to view through Friday. With this exhibit that the legislature declared of public interest, the Basque painter will say farewell to Argentina after also having participated in Semana Nacional Vasca in San Nicolas.

This intensive summer course, in the southern hemisphere, to train Basque teachers will take place in Chacabuco, in the province of Buenos Aires January 13-20. Organized by FEVA and the local Basque club, the event will gather teachers in training from Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay who will work hard for a week with different goals, including getting ready for the HABE exam that they will take in Argentina in 2019.

A new edition of Mexican Guadalajara International Book Fair began last weekend, the largest in Latin America and once again, Basque literature and Basque publications will again be present at a stand that this year will also include the participation of Basque writer and poet Kirmen Uribe. After visiting the Fair, Uribe will then travel to Mexico City to participate in cultural events at the Euskal Etxea and UNAM.

The Euzko Etxea in Villa Maria is getting ready for its traditional Cultural Week that will take place December 2-9. In the coming days, the club will celebrate two events that are particularly important to the club: the International Day of Euskera and the End of Year Dinner. The club also reported about its participation in the Festival of Collectivities that was extremely successful.

The Berlin Euskal Etxea continues with its end of year program, inviting everyone to participate tonight in the showing of the documentary Markak, directed by Hannot Mintegia with members of the “Lobak” Association also present, Amaia Badiola and Usua Uribe. On Sunday, there is another event, a concert by the Aitor Etxebarria Ensemble, and next week “Euskal Zinema Berlinen,” Basque film in berlin with various screenings of Basque films.

Dr. Raul Iturria Igarzabal has a long career in the life of Politics in Uruguay as part of the National Party. After having served as minister as well as the mayor of the Department of Durazno, Iturria has now delved into historical research, the fruit of which is the book, The Basque Contribution to Uruguay. A descendant of Basques from Navarre and Gipuzkoa, Iturria says that “all Basque descendants, are still Basques,” and that he wrote this book “as a tribute thanking this “ethnic group from the Pyrenees.”

The 18th Reunion of Basque Libraries took place in the heart of Semana Nacional Vasca in San Nicolas. Representatives from six clubs visited different questions related to library work, including the diffusion of “eLiburutegia,” a platform for digital loans in Euskadi. They also paid tribute to Maria Marta Arrachea who worked for years as the librarian at Denak Bat in Mar del Plata. Arrachea passed away last February after battling a terminal illness.

This year grants have increased by 10 million Euros when compared to 2016. The majority of the projects are in the field of universal rights and the empowerment of women. Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, the Saharawi Arab Republic, and Palestine are the countries with the most projects that are financed.

The anticipated project will begin to materialize on December 3rd, the International Day of Euskera and the date the club was founded 25 years ago. Members of the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea will place the cornerstone of the Gernika space, a small public plaza that will be the site of the clubs’ cultural activities. This won’t be the only activity to mark the 25th anniversary of the club, since they will also be hosting an International Meeting of Basque Clubs on December 8-10.
