The Pergamino Basque club doubly participated in the “Night of Museums” with a photo exhibit about the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, along with performances by their dantzaris and a Tamborrada at the INTA. The exhibit, “Gernika 80 Years,” was exhibited at the Municipal Museum. The dance and musical performances concluded the guided visits that took place at the Experimental Station, INTA, recently declared a “National Historic Site”

The quality of the products, the variety of the food offerings and the opinions of critics were some of the factors that the Caterings Company took into account when creating the list. The “Night of Books,” organized in San Miguel increased in quantity and quality of proposals as well as in the number of attendees. This year, more than 20,000 people viewed the exhibit and the local Basque group, Askatasunaren Bidea, again was part of the event, becoming an attraction for those interested in our culture. A significative number of the visitors to the stand became members of the group.

This is not a new subject, but taking a step towards its implementation is new. The Basque Government through the Director of the Basque Community Abroad, has started a campaign to gather input and proposals about the celebration of a “Basque Diaspora Day.” What they require are proposals for the date to celebrate it and why. If you have an opinion, don’t hesitate to email them by the end of the year.

The festivities took place at the Euskaro Basque Club in Montevideo and constituted an excellent moment to evaluate the activities done by the Federation over the last two decades. Accompanied by the Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Gorka Alavarez Aranburu, and the Delegate of Euskadi for Argentina and Mercosur, Sara Pagola and representatives of other FIVU clubs, the Federation renewed its commitment to Basque culture and Euskera.

This afternoon the exhibit, “The Bombing of Gernika,” curated by the Peace Museum in Gernika that arrived to Montevideo, thanks to the President of the Chamber and the Euskal Erria Basque Club will be inaugurated this afternoon. This will be followed by a lecture on the bombing by Dr. Xabier Irujo. In Salto, the Euskaldunen Taldea Basque Club will carry out a Euskal Festa on the weekend with a complete festival program that includes an international and national meeting of Basque clubs.

Semana Vasca Argentina 2017 is over but we continue to get stories, anecdotes, greetings and comments on the event in our office. The Beti Aurrera group in Chivilcoy wrote us to thank dantzari and professor in Tudela, Juan Sainz. Thanks to him and through the internet they got information and direction, as well as exchanged practice videos so that they could perform a dance, “La Revoltosa,” directed by Juan Sainz, at the dance gala in San Nicolas.

The William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno is awarded the ENE Saria 2017 according to a note from Eusko Ikaskuntza. The recognition comes on the 50th anniversary of the center’s founding. Just as it was made public, Kate Camino, administrative assistant at the Center, shared the good news on Facebook, highlighting its arrival in this special year, and also thanking everyone for the honor.

The work done together in regards to Euskera, and the realization that the celebration acquires its true meaning by speaking Basque 365 days a year, is emphasized in this year’s Institutional Declaration for the 2017 International Day of Euskera entitled, “Basque, common task that wants and needs us to collaborate 365 days a year.” Here is the message.

The William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno was established in 1967 as part of the Desert Research Institute that was creating new programs to reach various aspects of the area’s inhabitants and history. The idea to study Basques was proposed due to the Basques being a prominent minority in the region who had contributed greatly to its development. Fifty years later, the Center has evolved and become the largest Basque Studies program outside of the Basque Country. Its past, present and future were all celebrated on November 8th.
