The goals of the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea proposed at the beginning of the year “are being completed and have allowed the group to project new challenges for the next cycle,” club sources say. In this way, they will seek funding for the Bodega Harriague Cultural space and as well as a space to create the “Gernika Space” that is already underway and that they hope to reveal in 2018. December is the time of the year to evaluate and celebrate. Self-evaluation in order to improve, and celebrations to enjoy time with friends, and make toasts, especially when there is a good reason for them. Basque clubs in South America have a good reason, since International Day of Euskera is celebrated in December and it also marks the end of the year. Today, the second photo gallery of ENE 2017.

The fifth edition includes two categories: one for Basque students, and the other for those who naturally dominate the language. The texts can be written in either Batua or in any euskalki, but must be originals, having not been published or awarded prior. Deadline for submissions is January 20th. Works can be sent via email, snail mail, or can be dropped off at either of the organizing Basque clubs, Euskaltzaleok and Laurak Bat Basque clubs of Valencia.

Created in 1992 by Basque teachers at the Denak Bat Basque Club in Mar del Plata, the magazine “Euskara Denontzat” (Euskera for everyone) has been published for 25 years every December for the International Day of Euskera. In 2017, after celebrating its 25th birthday, the magazine that serves as the voice of Basque students and professors at the club is leaving behind its traditional paper format and will now be published online as a blog.

Basque students and teachers at the Aberri Etxea Basque Club in Viedma y Patagones, and Gure Txokoa Basque Club in Azul, are the winners of the “Euskaraz beti aurrera” contest organized by the Eusko Kultur Etxea in Buenos Aires. The winning submissions will be published soon on the institution’s blog and winners will receive their prizes, certificates and books, in the mail.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published the “Resolution of November 27, 2017, from the Director of the Basque Community Abroad regarding the grants awarded Euskal Etxeak in 2017.” The total amount awarded was 902,307 Euros divided into 782,307 in Chapter IV and the remaining 120,000 for Chapter VII. Eighty-five Basque clubs benefit with 71 awarded grants for operating and programs and another 14 awarded grants for infrastructure and equipment.

Musician, composer and researcher “Josetxu” Larzabal, who in his youth was part of the Lagun Onak Choral Association, is once again playing songs in Basque, now as part of the vocal quintet Canto Abierto in Posadas, in Misiones. Larzabal presented songs in Basque at the local Euskal Jatorri Basque Club and the idea of creating a club choir was also batted around.

Who in the United States, especially those in California and the west, hadn’t’ tried the Basque sauce made by the Basque company. In the country of barbecues, this was the preferred sauce of many BBQ fans. The company and the sauce were created in 1980 by immigrant from Navarre, Ramon Ylarregui, who sold it in 2015. Ramon Ylarregui passed away a few days ago. His rosary will be held today at 6pm at the Farewell Funeral Chapel in Fresno. His funeral, on Tuesday, at 10am at the Shrine of St. Therese.

For another year, the five days of the Fair went off without a hitch and we are now in the process of evaluating how this 52nd edition went. According to the information provided by the organization, some 110,000 people attended. In regards to the Diaspora, the Basque Global Network, under the slogan “diasporizatu” had its own stand. Recently arrived from Reno, via Uruguay, we saw historian Xabier Irujo, director of the Nevada, Reno University CBS, who was born in Caracas, signing copies of his latest book.

In Euskal Herria, the International Day of Euskera was celebrated on December 3rd; also everywhere else where there are Euskaldunak, but not always just on december 3rd. In South America, some Basque clubs began the festivities began at the end of November and some other places will extend the celebration until the 17th together with a toast to the year’s end. The sounds of Euskera can be heard in Rio de la Plata and in the Andes, thanks to those who study and teach Basque there.
