It is Christmas time, New Year's Eve is close and this long weekend many people and families in the Basque Country and its diaspora will meet to share and enjoy time together. Many Euskal Etxeak all over the world already enjoyed their last gatherings and festivals of the year, celebrating together Euskera Day/Christmas/End of the Year. Thank you for all your work, for being there and for being part of our big little family in the Basque Diaspora. Zorionak!

Xabier Irujo receives the ENE Saria 2017 in Donostia on behalf of University of Nevada, Reno

On December 3, International Euskera Day (Euskararen Nazioarteko Eguna ENE), Eusko Ikaskuntza announced that the ENE Saria 2017 would be awarded to the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Xabier Irujo, Director of the Center, received the award on December 13th from Eusko Ikaskuntza President, Iñaki Dorronsoro.  The ENE award is a reproduction of the anagram designed by Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea.

A charitable campaign in Chile is receiving the response of donors in this country, including members of the Basque Diaspora, in response to the blood necessities of Basque students, Irati I.L. and Aitana M.K. who were severely injured when the bus they were traveling in wrecked.  The accident resulted in two people being injured and two fatalities.  Article by Teresa Flaño today in El Diario Vasco

Irene Larraza will be the new director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, replacing Miren Arzalluz

Irene Larraza, from Tolosa, will begin her new role at the Etxepare Basque Institute in January

Irene Larraza, current director of the Promotion and Diffusion of Culture at the Etxepare Basque Institute will now take the reins of the institution in January.  She will be filling the vacancy made by Miren Arzalluz, who will leave the position as director in order to take a job managing the Palais Galliera, fashion museum in Paris.

Although founded in 1991, the Euskal Etxea in General Belgrano, in the province of Buenos Aires, hasn’t been active over the last few years.  This year, 2017, that is now ending, has included its reactivation.  Its members have once again started to gather and besides organizing cultural activities, have also elected a board of directors and have resurrected their legal status.  Full activity will resume in 2018 with dance, cooking and Euskera classes.

Euskera Day in Viña del Mar-Valparaíso

We continue with the last end-of-year activities from Basque clubs. Only a week left before we say goodbye to this year and we begin the goals and projects of 2018.  Basque students and teachers in the Diaspora will surely have the goal to continue studying and spreading the Basque language.  This climate of commitment to the language is present in many of the last Basque club events of 2017. The Basque Government announces 8 scholarships specialized in Foreign Action in Gasteiz, Brussels, Santiago and Bogota

The Basque Government has given the green light at a meeting of its Governing Council this Tuesday to announce 8 scholarships specialized in Foreign Action, for its headquarters in Vitoria-Gasteiz (4), Brussels (2), Santiago (1), and Bogota (1). After this, all that is left is publishing the call in the Official Bulletin for the month-long application period to begin the next day.  These scholarships are for 12 months and are aimed at youth with degrees seeking experience in this area.

After the International Day of Euskera, the Euskal Etxea in Lima reviewed its 2017 activities

ENE celebration at the Lima Euskal Etxea

The Euskal Etxea in Lima has a group of youth, some from Euskal Herria, and other locals, that develop an interesting annual program of activities.  This year, 2017, began with the Tamborrada and continued with the celebration of traditional festivities that are important on the Basque calendar.  In addition to these, the center also held charitable events, like “Christmas in the Jungle,” that was carried out at the end of the year.  Basque classes are taught by Xabi Gil. Cultural and recreational activities will continue into 2018.

The University of Navarre will begin a free online course on Navarre’s history and culture in January

“Navarre: History and Culture” free online class from January 8-February 18 provided by the University of Navarre

The University of Navarre will begin a free online course entitled, “Navarre: History and Culture.”  The contents will be presented in an audio-visual format; with supplementary written materials, self-assessments and a forum where the students can communicate with their teachers.  It is comprised of 10 modules.  After opening the course, the student can join at any time, as long as it is completed by the deadline, February 18 at 23:59 European continental time.
