Anamarie (Sarratea) Lopategui and Mikel Lopategui are a young couple who are very well-known in Basque circles in Nevada with well-deserved recognition as musicians, she plays the triki and he the pandero. They are also the owners of the “Ogi Deli” (Ogi is bread in Basque) a very popular deli/bar in Elko. This week the Elko Daily classified them as one of the top 10 business of 2017 in Elko.

Four dantzaris and a txistulari from the Ortzadar group will be in charge of the workshops from February 3-10 for representatives of Navarrese centers in Argentina. By the end of 2018, the club foresees the meeting of Navarrese centers in the country, with Uxue Barkos potentially attending herself. In the words of Raul Osvaldo Amatriain, president of the center in Rosario who told EuskalKultura.com: “When I met with the authorities in Navarre, I asked them for cultural support and I was very well-received.”

With the end of the year looming and the warmth of the Christmas holidays, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and President Uxue Barkos have addressed their respective constituents in two Christmas and New Year messages. Both reviewed the passing year, and are betting on the New Year, sending their warmest wishes, in both written and video form. We didn't learn about a similar message from Jean Rene Etchegaray, President of the commonwealth of Iparralde.

Eusketxe, the Eusko Kultur Etxea in Buenos Aires has begun its summer vacation, but not before finishing its work. In a busy month of December it celebrated Euskera Day, held it annual General Assembly, and announced the results of the Story Contest (that you aready red about on EuskalKultura.com) and even held a wine tasting, showed the film Beltzean Mintzo and held a week of talks on Cultural Routes in Euskal Herria.

At the end of 2017, the club’s board of directors announced the plan for 2018. The club will resume its activities in March and will have one its most important events of the year in September, as part of the Festival of Collectivities. But right now the biggest challenge for the local Basques will have to do with the possibility of having their own space. In March the club will begin building its clubhouse on land loaned them by the city.

The selected person would be in charge of teaching pilota to people of all ages, and teach them about Basque sports, organize tournaments, and be in charge of promoting this activity, along with being in charge of the annual Basque Festival held every summer in Saint Pierre. Some items are negotiable. The contract would run from April-September, 35 hours/week, at 1,600 Euros a month. The person must have a degree or be in the process of getting one.

During the Christmas holidays original gift ideas are coming from the Diaspora, in this case from the US. The first is the CD “Amerikanuak,” recorded by the American group by the same name that includes classics danced at Basque festivals in the west. Proceeds from its sales will go to NABO’s Aita Tillous Fund. The second idea is a silk neckerchief with a Lauburu created for the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, NV. This event will take place at the end of January and gathers a large number of Basque and Basque-American guests.

The celebration of Euskera Day 2017 organized by the Euskal Erria Basque Club was especially dedicated to commemorate the Bombing of Gernika, on the year of the 80th anniversary of this tragic event. With historian Xabier Irujo, Director of the Center for Basque Studies in Reno, NV, as special guest an exhibit on the bombing was inaugurated and Irujo gave a series of talks. In this context, a plaque was also unveiled in Florida.

Midnight on Sunday is the deadline to send your ideas to the Basque Government for a date to celebrate Diasporaren Eguna – Diaspora Day. Remember that the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad has requested suggestions and reasoning to decide which day of the year would be the most appropriate to celebrated Diaspora Day in the Basque Country and around the world. It would be a day to show, reach out, celebrate and declare the extension that the Diaspora is of Euskal Herria in the world.

The Basque club has great news to share with the community: In 2018 all of its activities, dances, Euskera and food events will take place at their new clubhouse. The locale is situated in the center of the city, and club members have already had the chance to visit, holding their end of year party there. The formal inauguration won’t take place until the end of January with other Basque club representatives in the area also attending.
