A Basque icon that reflects scenes of the local Basque history. The “Basque Mural” in the capital city is situated downtown, on a wall on the side of the Historic Fronton and Hotel Anduiza, constructed in1904 to accommodate and entertain the Basque community. Painted in 2000, the Basque mural will now be substituted, according to the City Council, due to its deterioration. It will be replaced shortly by a reproduction of the original but this time in vinyl.

Colombian gastronomy fans and people who love Basque contributions to the culinary world have a new opportunity this week in Bogota with the celebration of “Euskal Sukaldaritza Jaialdia” (Basque Gourmet Food Festival) at the Bruto Restaurant, managed by Colombian Chef, Felipe Arizabaleta. On the occasion of the restaurant’s fifth anniversary, he has invited his colleague form the Basque Country, Josu Salvatierra.

Berri Txarrak will begin its latest world tour this Friday presenting its latest album, Infrasoinuak, in Busan, Korea, with performances in Asia, Australia, and Europe, including a performance in Bilbao at the BEC in Barakaldo. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased on the group’s website. The tour includes stops in places like Seoul, Beijing, Macau, Bangkok, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Barcelona, Madrid, Dublin and London.

The Eduardo Chillida Chair has been part of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität in Frankfurt since 2013, and aims to promote the study specialized in the research of Basque art by inviting an expert annually to teach classes on various topics to its students. This year’s program is speeding along, being taught by expert in theory and history of contemporary art, Tobias Voght with activities in both Frankfurt and Berlin.

There were 111 individuals who benefited at 16 euskal etxeas in six countries: Argentina (15), Chile (19), Cuba (63), United Kingdom (1), Uruguay (1) and Venezuela (12). The “Program of Economic Benefits to Basque Centers to Address Needs and Assist those Person belonging to Basque Communities Abroad in Situations of Extreme Need,” in 2017 had a budget of 202,000 Euros. The Official Bulletin published on Friday included the Resolution by the Director of the Basque Community Abroad.

Today is the eve of San Sebastian Day. Tonight at midnight the streets of Donostia will fill for the Tamborrada festivities, same in Azpeitia. San Sebastian Day will also be celebrated in Tafalla as well as other places in the Basque Country, each one in its own way. In the Diaspora the festivities will also be celebrated in places like Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Necochea, New York, Buenos Aires, London, Shanghai, Caracas and Paris, along with in Cañuelas, and Bahia Blanca….Gora Donostia!

The Donostia Tamborrada is no longer just for locals. Every year more drummers from other countries hold their own Tamborrada’s or participate in the one in Donostia. At the Tamborrada at Tecnun students from Honduras, Mexico and Nigeria will parade. Report in El Diario Vasco by Dani Soriazu and Garazi Rezabal.

The BOPV published on Tuesday, January 2nd included the call from the Basque Government’s Secretary General of Foreign Action for 8 scholarships specialized in Foreign Action in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Brussels, Santiago and Bogota. Tomorrow, the month-long application period begins. Scholarships last for 12 months and are aimed at degree holders looking for experience in this field: 4 for Gasteiz, 2 for Brussels, 1 for Santiago, Chile and 1 for Bogota, Colombia.

Julieta Gaztañaga (Bahia Blanca, Argentina 1977) is an anthropologist. She had no reference through her family of her Basque background, beyond the verification of that fact, which her own last name proved, with some people having difficulty in pronouncing it. But carrying the last name did not bring along with it the content or knowledge about the culture, so Julieta tried to acquire it by jumping into the Euskaltegi Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires. Danele Sarriugarte interviewed her in Argia.

The New Year is around the corner and everyone is making wishes along with James Patrick Kelly, food critic for the Idaho Statesman, the main paper in Boise who was not going to be outdone: he wants a New Basque Cuisine Restaurant. The journalist argues that the “City of Trees” has good establishments for traditional Basque cooking, but that he misses a more creative step. Who knows if Santa Claus or Olentzero will listen to him and make his wish come true?
