The Basque Government approved Gaztemundu 2018 at its Council meeting on Tuesday. This year’s program is aimed at youth from Basque clubs who would like to experience a two weeks educative stay in Euskadi. This year the program is dedicated to traditional Basque dance. There are 15 spots available to individuals between the ages of 18 and 35, and the program will run September 1-16, 2018.

The event took place at the Juan Bautista Alberdi Public Library of this town of the province of Santa Fe, in Argentina, and was led by Jorgelina Otegui and Roberto Landaburu. Through books, images and dance, the organizers provided the audience a panorama of the Basque culture. They also remembered Gernika, with the testimony of Modesto Egia, from Eibar, a witness of the Bombing who died two years ago in Venado Tuerto.

Would you like to teach the Basque language and culture in Bordeaux? The Bordeaux Euskal Etxea and the University of Bordeaux Montaigne are hoping to hire a Basque teacher for the 2018-2019 term. It would involve teaching classes Monday-Friday at noon, and at night at the Gau Eskola at the Euskal Etxea, and during the day at the university. The contract is for nine months. The growing migratory restrictions in the United States, over the last two years, even more accentuated since Trump became president, have had endless affects all over the world including, in particular, a group of Jai Alai players from the Basque Country. The painting will hang in the “Mikel Ezkerro” room at the clubhouse in hopes of keeping the memory alive and to learn from what occurred in thae Basque village on April 26, 1937. This is how the Urrundik Basque Club commemorated the 81st anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, just days from the 18th anniversary of its founding and the 28th anniversary of its radio program “Presencia Vasca” (The Basque Presence).

Gorka Alvarez Aranburu will travel to Uruguay and Argentina and will meet with representatives of several Basque club and also participate next week in “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country.” The Basque Government’s Director for the Basque Community Abroad arrives today in the capital of Uruguay where he will take part in a FIVU event to begin a journey where he will meet with representatives from Euskal Erria, Saltoko Euskaldunen Talde, Haize Hegoa and Euskaro, before continuing on to Argentina.

News of celebrations regarding the Day of the Basque Homeland continue to come even though the official celebration took place on April 1st. Nevertheless, many Basque clubs pushed their Aberri Eguna celebrations back days, and even weeks. In fact there are still some to take place. Without going further Basque clubs like that in Villa Maria, and Jose C. Paz will celebrate Aberri Eguna this coming week.

“Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country. BAC” will be on May 6th, the next big date in the Diaspora, and an important opportunity that some agencies in the Basque Country don’t want to miss to meet with the Basque-Argentine Community. And so besides representation from the governments in both Iruña-Pamplona and Vitoria-Gasteiz, Jasone Agirre, Secretary of the Diaspora for EH Bildu , and references from Gure Esku Dago, Angel Oiarbide and Iñigo Urrutia, have also announced their attendance.

The Basque Government’s Council has given the green light, at a meeting this morning, to the Letter of Intention between the governments of Colombia and the Basque Government to support exchanges of experiences in the fields of education, coexistence, and human rights. This action is derived from contacts made by the Lehendakari during his official visit to Colombia in May 0f 2017 and the Education Plan for post-conflict promoted by the Colombian Minister of Education.

The Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK) – the largest and most modern cultural center in Latin America located in Buenos Aires in what used to be the main post office – will host April 25-27 a conference on the exile of the first Lehendakari, Jose Antonio Agirre, a theme that will also be treated in the film series The Journey of Agirre. Five documentaries that comprise the series will be shown with various roundtables and the participation of different Buenos Aires City Basque clubs.
