The Euskaro Basque Club in Montevideo, the oldest still existing in Uruguay founded in 1911, carried out its General Assembly last Monday where among other things, elections for the board of directors was held, now led by Juan Carlos Ariztegui. Other officers include Lucia Goñi (secretary) and Carlos Larregueta (treasurer) among other members. Complete board below.

This was gathering number 23, organized by the Simon Bolivar Association led by Amaya Zenarutzabeitia. This is an annual meeting for those Basques who have either resided in the Caribbean country, were born there, or are descendants or family, including some who are visiting Euskadi on these dates. The goals is to preserve ties, and maintain the feeling, the history and pride of being part of the Basque-Venezuelan community and the Diaspora. Gorka Alvarez, Director for the Basque Community Abroad, presented the oldest member, Felipe Serna, who is 86 years old, with a badge.

As part of an agreement signed by the Euskal Etxea and the National University of Rio Cuarto (UNRC), Gure Ametza Basque Club will now open its doors to classes as part of the “Barrial University” project that it supports. In order to welcome students, the club carried out several renovations at its facilities including refurbishing classrooms and arrangements at the entrance. Gure Ametza is very happy to be able to contribute in this way to the development and training of the community residing in its neighborhood.

Pol-en Edicions in Barcelona is working on a translation of the book Hilda dago poesia? (Is Poetry Dead?) by Joseba Sarrionandia in hopes of publishing it in Catalan. In order to do this though, they need help from people who can provide economic support for the project through crowdfunding on Verkami. Pol-en Edicions is a cooperative and independent publisher.

Eguzkia (Sun) includes articles on various Basque topics. Nevertheless, as each of the Basque club’s channels of communication, the club will also include information on its activities and projects, including the ones with a more lateral connection with the Basque culture. The first issue of the magazine was presented during the commemoration of the anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, and is already available online.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) published today, May 15th, included the Resolution from the Secretary General of Foreign Action, Marian Elorza, opening the application period for this year’s Gaztemundu program aimed at youth between the ages of 18-35 who are members of Basque clubs around the world. Fifteen individuals will have the opportunity to participate in the program September 1-16, dedicated this year to traditional dance. June 18th is the deadline to apply.

Alberto Irigoyen Artetxe is a member of the Euskal Erria Basque Club in Montevideo and is in charge of the Euskal Erria Publishers. He has made numerous significant contributions to the knowledge of the Basque diaspora communities through a life of research. Among his works, he digitized Basque journals published outside of Euskal Herria between 1875-1975, facilitating access to this material to Basque clubs and entities all over the world.

The class was taught by Mariano Andoni Azcarate and gathered a large group of people interested in Basque dance. This and other activities will continue to be organized by the Gure Etxea Basque Club now with its brand new legal status. With this step, they can now request to be included in the Basque Government’s Basque club registry adquiring full rights and obligations.

The General Assembly of the Eusko Etxea in Corpus Christi, in the Argentine Province of Misiones, reelected Olga Leiciaga as its president. Those gathered elected the board of directors and again confided in Olga to carry out the office. Olga will celebrate her 80th birthday in August and is getting ready for the party with the same excitement and vivacity she has for everything. A special birthday gathering will be held on August 30th at the Itxaropen Basque club in Saladillo. Friends and family are invited.

Betiko Haizea (Eternal Wind) is an experimental audiovisual project that will delve into the life of Jose Antonio Martinez Osses. The documentary will unite material contributed by references of the Alboka including Kepa Junkera and Ibon Koteron. Betiko Haizea is an independent project without any kind of funding, whose only objective is to pay tribute to this musician from Araba and this traditional Basque wind instrument.
