La Plata, Argentina. The 8th gathering of Community Libraries – EBC took place on Saturday June 22nd at the Euzko Etxea in La Plata sponsored by the Association of Graduate Libraries of the Republic of Argentina (ABGRA), and the Information Society of Argentina (SAI). Attending there were some 10 presenters who represented the Basque, Galician, Czech and German speaking communities (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) as well as Lithuania.
The meeting began with a review by La Plata Euzko Etxea Maria Fernanda Astigarraga on the previous seven meetings, as well as an intervention by the hosting Euzko Etxea librarian, Susana Aramburu who shared the activities at the “Matxin Burdin” library with the audience including a film series, book presentations, exhibits, talks, contests, a magazine, library meetings as well as social gatherings among others.
Throughout the morning and into the afternoon, the papers presented formed an overview of the work done currently by community libraries, their working methods, diffusion channels, different methodologies adapted to the interests of the users being taken into account, for example ages and the incorporation of new technologies.
The meeting concluded with a recreation of the life of Marina Gonzalez de Apodaca the “Basque Child,” who moved to Russia at the beginning fo the Spanish Civil War, based on the book Marinka: a Russian, a Basque by Rodolfo Luna Almeida, who also attended the meeting. The recreation was done by narrators Patricia Rivas and Marita Lico.
