The “Dairyman Race,” is a classic car race.  As its names implies, racers need to use the roads that Basque dairy farmers in the area used to use at the beginning of the last century, throught cities like Cañuelas, Lobos and General Las Heras.  After the race, the Zazpirak Bat will provide lunch at its Basque Taberna.

General Las Heras, Argentina.   On the last Sunday in April, the second edition of the “Dairyman Race,” organized by the Classic Car Association in Cañuelas (AVAC) and the Zazpirak Bat Basque Club in Gral. Las Heras, will take place.  The event is a classic car race whose circuit unites the most important places that the Basque dairy men used to tour in the area during the 19th, and the first part of the 20th centuries.

“The goal is to remember and pay tribute to Basques from prior centuries, each one a link in the national milk production chain.  That is why the circuit will join the cities of Cañuelas, Uribelarrea, Empalme Lobos, Zapiola, Seratti and Gral. Las Heras, some of the major supply points in the Southern Basin Milk production,” Luis “Lae” Echegaray explained to EuskalKultura.com. He is a big supporter of the idea, besides president of the Zazpirak Bat Basque Club.

The competition is really a regulation race and will include vehicles to the year 1975 divided into two categories: those built up to 1940 that can run between 30-35 kilometers/hour; and those built up to 1975 whose velocity will not surpass 60 kilometers/hour.

Participants

The “Dairyman Race” will gather members of the Classic Car Association in Cañuelas and the herense Association “Horacio Anasagasti” both comprised of admirers of classic cars from places like Marcos Paz, Cañuelas, Lobos, Merlo and Buenos Aires City.  “Last year we had some 40 classic cars participate and nearly 70 attended the event to display their vehicles in our city.  Keeping in mind, the first edition’s success, our expectations for 2016 are even more positive,” they said.

After the race, there will be an awards ceremony and to conclude the event, the Basque Club will provide lunch at its Basque Taberna, located at the intersection of Lozano and Avenida Villamayor in Gral. Las Heras.  Tickets can be purchased for $270.  The event will take place on April 24, at 9am in Cañuelas where the starting line is.  For more information, contact the Basque Club directly by email: zazpirakbat.lh@gmail.comFacebook or on the club’s blog.
