The game “Apalabrados” or “Angry Words” presented its Basque version last August and since many Basque users have been hooked on it via their cell phones and Facebook. The application allows playing and interacting with other places on-line and is also available in English, Spanish and Catalan. The creator of “Apalabrados” is Maximo Cavazzani, from Argentina, explains that 25,000 games have already been played in Basque and the community of users continues to grow.

Bilbao, Bizkaia.  One of the most successful multiuser games, was made available in Basque last August, and has hooked a number of Basque speakers.  The version in Basque was promoted by Maite Goñi professor at Mondragon University, who contacted the company that created the game, Etermax.  IXA taldea, and the University of the Basque Country, as well as the Vice-Minister of Linguistic Policy also participated in the process.

According to its creator, Maximo Cavazzani, in an interview with Deia, the group of Basque players increases every day, and currently there have been 25,000 games played in Basque.

It is very easy to play Apalabrados/Angry Words. The app can be downloaded from here, or by phone on Google Play (Android) or through the AppStore (iPhone).  In the language section all you have to do is choose the Ikurriña, register and start looking for competitors to play against.  The game allows friends or strangers to play starting from a central word and creating words from it, much like Scrabble.
