Bakersfield, California, USA. In a year in which the coronavirus crisis, the confinements and cuts that accompany it, continues to hit hard, it generated a gesture of hope and excited smiles to see the impressive support given to the Basque Club last Saturday in Bakersfield. With the cancellation this year of most of its activities, including its participation in the local fair, one of the main fundraisers for the club, the Kern County Basque Club made a call to participate on Saturday in a food sale “drive thru,” in order to provide some economic relief to the club.
The numbers are significant: more than 400 cars passed through the Euskal Etxea to pick up their orders without leaving their cars. In three hours, from 4pm-7pm, at some times the line of cars was half of a mile long having sold more than 1,800 sandwiches, along with 375 salsas, 400 servings of beans and another 380 servings of tomatoes. Easy to say. In all more than $30,000 were raised in three hours, Basque club sources told EuskalKultura.eus.
(Just before opening the Basque club for the sale, Kristie Onaindia, presented the route for cars to follow)
Spokesperson for the Kern County Basque Club, Maria (Bernal) Toretta, would like to sincerely thank the entire city of Bakersfield for the enormous support they showed, as well as to the local Basque community. “The response was overwhelming,” she said adding that “It was a time to enjoy the food the Basque Club is known for during the Kern County Fair, this year with it cancelled, and to seek a little normalcy during the pandemic."
Zorionak, Bakersfield!
