Who is this Basque man? Gil Amestoy, a volunteer at the WLACC and he takes great pride in his heritage (from Lake Oswego Review)

10/29/2015

It’s difficult to imagine a day when Gil Amestoy isn’t cheerful. So when he greets West Linn Adult Community Center patrons, he has a smile on his face and a joke in his head he can’t wait to share. He’s larger than life. He and his wife, Cynthia, have lived in West Linn for nearly 40 years, but he’s only recently been volunteering at the WLACC.

Doug Dickston. Amestoy retired from Eoff Electric Company where he worked in the commercial lighting division. His first volunteer commitments were with the West Linn Baseball and the West Linn Lions organizations. There, he met Mike Lindner, a longtime WLACC volunteer, who talked Amestoy into a volunteering at the center.

Amestoy takes great pride in his heritage. He and his family emigrated to the U.S. from France when he was a child. They came from the Basque region in the Pyrenees, and it’s his Basque heritage that Amestoy identifies with most.

He loves to cook Basque food — “country food,” he calls it. He has prepared some of the Mediterranean dishes that he loves for a few of the WLACC lunches.

Amestoy also volunteers at the WLACC front desk on Wednesday afternoons where he specializes in giving visitors a good-natured hard time. He’s also not above greeting people in costume: he once donned a hard hat for his entire front desk shift, and you get the feeling a lampshade wouldn’t be out of the question.

Besides cooking, Amestoy enjoys oil painting, fishing and gardening. He laughs easily and clearly likes being with people. If you come by the WLACC on a Wednesday afternoon, be sure to introduce yourself to Gil Amestoy. He’ll definitely have a good word to share with you.

The lunch menu this week features shepherd’s pie on Friday, Oct. 30; chef’s surprise on Monday, Nov. 2; and birthday brunch Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Questions? Call the WLACC at 503-557-4704. We are located at 1180 Rosemont Road, West Linn 97068.
