Eastern Nevada and Western Utah gathering: 13th Annual Sheepherders Gathering in Baker (from The Ely Times)

01/01/2016

The 13th Annual Sheepherders Gathering will be held at the Border Inn January 15-16, 2016. The event, which is sponsored by the Great Basin Heritage Area Partnership, has been named Nevada Travel Network’s “2016 Event of the Year.” The gathering brings together sheepherders from eastern Nevada and western Utah to visit and swap stories of a vanishing way of life.

Brandi Roberts. The Border Inn is located at the Nevada-Utah state line and provides the only services along the 153-mile stretch of highway 50 between Ely, Nevada and Delta, Utah. Years ago, during the lean winter months, the Border survived on the business of sheepherders who came in for staples such as milk and eggs or to eat a hearty meal. In 2003, Owner Denys Koyle decided to host this gathering as a “thank you” to the folks who supported her business over the years.

The Old Sheepherders Gathering has grown into a weekend-long event that includes Friday’s open mic story-telling (7pm-9pm), Saturday morning sourdough pancakes, and Saturday night’s family-style Basque dinner (5pm; $25/person; reservations required). This year there will be a screening of Ghosts on the Mountain, a documentary about immigrant sheepherder life, followed by a discussion with the film’s creator, Jared Jakins (10am Saturday), and old-time cowboy music by Sourdough Slim and Roberts Armstrong (2:30pm Saturday). Finally, the Sheepherders Ball kicks off Saturday night at 7:30 with music from the Silver Sage Family Band.

To make reservations for a hotel room or the Basque Dinner, please contact Denys Koyle or Gary Perea at 775-234-7300.
