Pocos son los libros autobiográficos en la literatura vasca, quizás porque somos demasiado pudorosos, dice la escritora Arantxa Urretabizkaia, nacida en San Sebastián en 1947, quien en su nuevo libro, Retratos en blanco y negro, regresa a los recuerdos de su infancia para hablar de un momento muy preciso en la historia del País Vasco: la posguerra y el franquismo. Es un retrato familiar que deja entrever la situación política, social y lingüística de esa época.

Foreign-Language Oscars: Spain's Surprising Basque Romance 'Flowers' by Jon Garaño and JM Goenaga (from Hollywood Reporter )

For the first time ever, Spain’s bid for the Academy Award for best foreign-language film will not be in Spanish. Instead, Flowers, a subtle drama about romance and memory, marks the first time a Basque-language film will represent the country for the Academy Awards race. The $1.8 million (€1.7 million) drama is the second feature by the directorial team comprised of Jon Garano and Jose Maria Goenaga, following 80 Days in 2010. Both films were co-productions between Moriarti and Irusoin production houses, located in Spain’s northern Basque region.

The Translator Relay: Amaia Gabantxo (interview with translator Amaia Gabantxo, from Words without borders)

Our "Translator Relay" series features a new interview each month. This month's translator will choose the next interviewee, adding a different, sixth question. For November's installment, Jason Grunebaum passed the baton to Amaia Gabantxo, a writer, flamenco singer, and literary translator specializing in Basque literature. She has translated works by every canonical Basque author, and published and performed on both sides of the Atlantic. At present, she is developing two hybrid literary/musical/performance art projects in Chicago:Palo a Palo, which combines flamenco and Butoh, and Soniché, which fuses flamenco with classical music.

Batzarlekuan bi aulki besterik ez, eta adreilu batzuk pilatuz eta ohol bat jarriz atondu dute denentzako jarlekua. Listo. Eta bota du ideia orduan Leopoldo Zugazak: disko eta liburu azoka bat. Zalantzak hasieran, eta irmo Zugaza berean. «Ez bazaizue interesatzen, neuk bakarrik egingo dut».
