Martial was born on August 18, 1928 in Saint-Etienne de Baigorry, France. He came to the United States in 1937 with his parents and 4 brothers. They settled in Ely, Nevada. In 1945 they moved to Stockton California. During this time he worked at different jobs, even working in the family sheep business. He worked for P.G. & E. for a few years until he decided to buy his own truck. He worked many long days hauling hay. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Marie Therese Lacondeguy. He drove truck until 1962 when he & and his wife bought a small country store in Madera, which they called Etcheverry’s Market. They worked the market themselves in the beginning, but later they hired help & their son Pierre joined them in the store business after his graduation from high school. Their daughter Denise worked there part-time while going to college.
During the time he had the market he helped many people. He gave them food on credit until they received their payroll checks & then they would pay for the food he gave them on credit. He would help anyone in need, no matter what race, religion or economic situation. He saw all people as equals, he never denied help to anyone who asked. He stayed at the store for 37 years when in December 1999 they sold the store. In 2000 they bought a 40 acre vineyard. They lived in a house on the land that they farmed until 2011 when they sold the vineyard & he permanently retired at the age of 83.
He is preceded in death by his parents Pierre & Grace Etcheverry, his brothers, Arnold, John, Maurice & Jim Etcheverry. His in-laws Pierre & Marie Louise Lacondeguy, his infant son, baby Etcheverry and his granddaughter Marie Therese Cisneros.
