basque heritage worldwide
02/28/2024 - Hummelstown, PA, USA
Juliette Domenica Fogarty née Ithurburn passed peacefully under Hospice care February 28 near her home in Hummelstown, PA. She was steeped in her Basque heritage, staunch in her Catholic faith, and immensely proud of her family.
Born May 16, 1930 in Susanville, CA. She was the eldest with two brothers, Fred and Peter, in a family running several bands of sheep in the mountains and sagebrush of Plumas and Lassen Counties. She was educated by the Sacred Heart Sisters in Red Bluff, CA before earning her associates degree from Armstrong Business College, in Berkeley.
While living and working in San Francisco, she met and married her husband of 56 years, Harold Fogarty, a native of Oakdale. They moved to Oakdale when the Hershey Chocolate Company came to town and she became active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church becoming a lifetime member of the YLI Mater Christi #140, and serving as a den mother for the local Cub Scouts.
A promotion took the family east to Hershey, PA where she became active in St. Joan of Arc parish. There she participated in the St. Vincent de Paul and served as a catechist as well as being active in the Grieving Ministry among others.
She was an avid bridge player and was elected Judge of Elections for Derry Township. They surprised many by remaining east through retirement. Still, they traveled back to California often between trips throughout the states, to Ireland and the Basque country and on numerous cruises before Harold’s death.
She is survived by her four boys James (Beth), Daniel (Barbe), Paul (Frances), and Robert (Debbie) and grandchildren Matthew (Elyse), Hannah, Michael, William, Anna, Jack, Julie, Caroline, and Peter. She leaves behind many treasured loved ones of the Ithurburn and Fogarty extended families. She knew and loved them all until the end.
Viewing and Rosary Thursday March 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Oakdale Memorial Chapel, West F Street. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1225 Olive St., Oakdale on Friday March, 8 at 11 a.m.
