03/04/2021 - San Juan, Puerto Rico
Jesus Lasaga, for years president of Euskal Etxea of Puerto Rico, passed away this Thursday, March 4, 2021, as reported by the also member and current president of the association Eduardo Cifuentes.
Jesus Lasaga Belategui was born in the Iturralde baserri (farm) of Azkoaga in the village of Aramaio, in Araba-Alava. He joined the Passionists and after passing through the convents of Gabiria, Tafalla, Urretxu and Deusto, in 1958, when he was 24, Jesus left for Colombia and from there, after several years, to Puerto Rico. He later travelled to the Basque Country, left the Order and went back to Puerto Rico, and began working for a cemetery management area until his retirement.
In 1995, as part of a group of Basques who wanted to maintain their culture and ties with the Basque Country, he was a founder of the local Basque club (Basques in Puerto Rico, Inc) and its first president. He served in that position until 2005. Jesus participated in various World Congresses of Basque Communities representing Puerto Rico.
He raised a family in Cupey-Río Piedras (San Juan) and was a proud grandfather.
EuskalKultura.eus will be alert for details about services in his memory.
