10/13/2024 - Montevideo, Uruguay
Last Sunday, October 13, 2024, Agurtzane Aguado Ruiz passed away in Montevideo. She was deeply connected to the Basque community in Uruguay, particularly to the Basque Center Euskal Erria. Born in Bilbao in 1952, she arrived in Uruguay in 1956 with her mother after her father was exiled. She became involved with the Euskal Erria Basque Club (Society of Basque Fraternity Euskal Erria) in Uruguay’ capital city, an institution founded in 1912. In her youth, she was a dancer, and later she joined the Board of Directors. Aguado was elected vice president in 1992 and president in 1997, a position she held until the General Assembly in July of this year. She was a committed Basque nationalist, both culturally and politically, dedicating her entire life to the service of her homeland. In July 2023, the Euskal Erria Society, the Cerrarrusa Foundation of Boise (with the Cenarrusa Award 2022), and numerous friends from Euskadi and the Diaspora honored her in Montevideo. She passed away at the age of 72. GB. May she Rest in Peace.
